Hi, I am 45 yrs old. I lost my job last winter and can't find anywhere to work. My brother told me to do something I am passionate about...well, I can't play guitar for a living (Yet), but I have always loved driving. I have 10 yrs exp in Box trucks and dumps and 3 yrs as a limo driver in Chicago. I was a dispatcher for local deliveries as well. I always prefer to DRIVE to any vacation etc...to my wifes annoyance.
I am smart, clean cut, hardworking, mature, and can read and write the English language well.
If I were to go to a Driving School and got all the endorsements possible, would I have a good chance at getting a job? I live just outside of Chicago.
I would like maybe do 3 weeks on the road 1 week off type of thing - SOLO. Anyway, 80% of what I am reading here is that I should be prepared to be ripped off by whatever company I go with. What advice could I get from you folks to help me decide. I worked for Freightliner Service for a short time and it seemed the CR England trucks were the nicest and they did not have a problem getting their rigs repaired quickly. Any advice on where to train and who to try to work for?
I am not rich, but am willing to spend money to get well trained IF that helps me get a good job with a decent company. I just read a little bit about Ruell (sp?) or something like that. I want to learn properly and learn well. Thanks again.
Hello all, I have a few questions if you don't mind.

Hello, Teddy Salad and Welcome to the Site

There are several threads in our sub forum for trucking schools:
http://www.thetruckersreport.com/truckingindustryforum/trucking-schools/
I like Community/technical Colleges and their truck driver training programs. The colleges tend to not be partial to any one trucking company. They will help with job placement assistance, now and in the future.
My suggestion would be to do your homework on these schools. Call them and find out who they are placing their new graduates with. If you like what you hear, then plan a visit to the school.
Keep us posted and best of luck!!!!!simplyred1962, bullhaulerswife and Baack Thank this. -

That is sweet. The Thank You button will appear once you have made 2 post, in which you have.
It should now be on the bottom right hand corner of the post that you are viewing.

Attitude will get you anywhere, including in trouble. With that said I believe your experience and attitude will do well for you. Research the schools available, homework, homework and more homework. Apply yourself in a good school to the best of your ability, graduating in the top of your class will help. Finding the right company is definitely a learning experience, unless youre lucky. Good luck in your endeavor.
Baack, SCNewbie and kickin chicken Thank this.
