I'm really short, with short arms and not a lot of strength behind my arms. My company uses the shortest tandem rods I've ever used. I have to wedge one foot between the tires, and sort of rest the top of my arms against the trailer. My arms are so bruised it looks like my husband beats me! I was hoping for some advice for easier pulling that doesn't include purchasing a puller (don't have the $ at the moment).
Suggestions for Pulling Tandems?

No viable solution at this time if you're not willing or able to buy a puller.
1)Ask other drivers for help. They'll rush over to you eagerly, because a lot of men are idiots---like me. A lot of men will just flock over to you like magnets just because you asked them for help. Other women will probably help too---cause they're like that. My reasons for helping is because i genuinely want to help, not because i'm horny. But i'm still an idiot nontheless.
2) Plead with your company to get the new air-slider systems. These are not nessesarily faster, but they are a hell of alot easier physically. Literally all you have to do is press/pull a button after you get everything lined up.
The conventional slider system on most trailers suck. i know why they exist, but really, they shouldn't exist. i'm probably taller than you and i've been hurt pulling the tandem pin.
So, even if you did get a puller, it's still going to be hard.
Actually, now that i think of it, there is a device that can multiply force when pulling the tandem lever; i will search for a link if/when i get around to it.
P.S. wear really dark sunglasses all the time. This way everyone will really think your husband is beating on you.Last edited: Jun 14, 2010

try the sta-rat system. i dont have one but the way it reads it would be the berries. just a tip, carry a bottle of soapy water and when you get ready to slide them spray the pins and sliders ususlly makes it easier.

Check the next TA for a puller. They have several to choose from. The spring loaded ones are best ...that's my personal opinion, others may differ.
I'm 6 ft 225 lbs...and I can't pull some of this #### companies use as trailers. Thank God I work for a company now, that stays on top of their equipment. -
When I ran for Swift (they don't have the newest trailers on the road) there were a few I had a really tough time with. Usually, though, it was just a stuck pin, which I carry a 4 pound hammer for. There really is no one way to make it easier. I'm female too, 5'4" but probably built a little stronger than you. I've never had to ask for help pulling a pin...and some of them were tough. There were times I had to hold them out with a bungee cord because the slot was worn out.
My biggest suggestion to you is start doing some push-ups so you can develop your upper body strength. Get a couple of those little dumbells and use them. Tandem sliders aren't going to be the hardest thing you'll do out here. Wait until you have to pallet-jack your own load off. -
That's why I recommended the spring loaded puller. It pulls and maintains the pull, while you rock the trailer, freeing the pins. Once the pins are free, then the spring tension pulls the handle out for you.

Of course, you have to be able to pull the puller itself to full extension to begin with.
The system recommended by the other poster, works the same way, and is really simple. There are others on the market as well. -
I did this post not to long ago.
http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...uestion-about-tandem-locking-pin-locator.html POST #5
If you're that short and weak in the arms then any of those "TOOLS" you can buy at the truck Stops won't do you much good as they do require a little upper body strength to get them to work!
Read my post #5 as this doesn't require any strength to use. Yes you'll have to lay over a tire or two depending where the puller is located but still all you have to do is pull the handle out far enough till it stops and that is usually simple to do. It's the pins that get stuck and can pull your back out!
If you've read any of my "help posts" you'll know I would rather have something in the tool box that can do several jobs instead of a one time only takes up space tool!
Good luck
