I've been seeing a lot of the Galaxy DX949 refurbs online. I bought one for $100 with free priority shipping. They come looking and smelling like a new radio. Has anyone else picked up one of these?

They come with the same two-year warranty as the new radios.

And refurbs are 100% tested. Every one of them. New ones are not so lucky.

That's what I was thinking. I repalced a Cobra 29 LTD Classic. I bought it back in 1992. It has seen its last days. I just hope the Galaxy lasts half as long.

I thought the 29 could be fixed. I took it to the CB Shop at exit 33 on I-44 east of Joplin. I sat there with him and watched every move. My radio when turned on would loose RX and TX ability every time I hiy a little bump. It seemed to be centered around the external speaker output jack. When you pushed on the jack the radio would work for a second and then quit. After replacing the ext. speaker jack, it still did it. Well, anyways, after two hours he found some cracks in my circuit board. I saw them but my knowledge stops before that. He said the radon had seen its last bump on the road. There was no way to repair that board. I guess I could replace it but hell, I can buy a new 29 LTD Classic at Charleston, MO Love's T/S for $70. I spent $40 trying to resurrect the stupid thing. I still have another 29 but it needs work and I'm tired of putting money into old radios. I have had both of these since 91-92. It was time for something fresh.

There....I justified it! :biggrin_255: Now I can convince my wife that it was a have to situation.
Now I want to get the Top Gun Mods. That's the next thing. Don't tell her!:biggrin_25523:

My Uniden pc76 is also on it's "last leg"so I went and ordered me one of those 949 refurbs and a 2018 mic to hang off the side of it.

As the boards age cracks and solder problems can drive up the cost of repair to the point it just an't worth it. Caps dry out the old carbon resistors drift ( regency radios are really bad ) so you made a good choice.
I got rid of my entire station about 8 years ago and bought NEW it was taking up too much of my time to keep the 1940-1960 radios going. The wife ( also a general class ham ) said TREAT youeself to some new stuff .... so i did .....

Now radios built in 1990 are not that old I still have some radios built in the 40's .... My back up 6 meter staion i bought in 1976 still works but is a bit sick ......

As for the top gun mod IF they are done right and you understand that too much audio is just as bad as too little and it's what you want go for it just don't spend a bunch of money on modding radios ...Just tell her that the SMALL amount of money will make you so happy with your toy. It does not make sense to add as much in modds as you payed for the radio.

Here we don't do CB sets the shop only takes care of the jail but like any CB shop we see it all .... swimmers ones that went under wheels off of the roof and a few that just died ..... Ask any good cb shop about what water does to a radio it's not good.

Here we have about 2,000 UHF radios NOT CB which get used about 2,000 hours a year EACH and average 11 years before we replace them 90% are still working when to go to the great radio hunting grounds ..... By 2013 all the older ones have to be replaced yep the FCC changed the UHF radio rules again.
