I want to update the maps on my Garmin, but was wondering if anyone knows when the newest map is made available by Garmin? I don't want to spend money doing an update only to find out that shortly after updating a newer map is available.
Also: Do firmware and other non-map updates have to be done on a computer, or are any of the updates done automatically through the satellite system?

Garmin has a downloadable program to keep your GPS updated:
http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp
if you have an older unit you may have to search to find other updates for it. -
Ive had mine (255w) for two years and haven't updated it,really isn't a "need"
the majority of the update content is worthless "points of interest" type crap. -
I love my Garmin...but
You need access to a high speed connection. The updates are huge, and dial up could take a week or more. Why Garmin hasn't figured out how to install "updates" is beyond me. They force you to format and install the whole #### thing.
If you've had your Garmin for awhile. you would be better off buying a new one. A single update is about 30-50% of the cost of a new unit.
A lifetime subscription, cost $120. And most are worthless, outside the free one you get with the unit. -
U can d/l the 2011 map update (hacked version) from various torrent sites I have it running now on my Garmin 465 t. If your unsure about how to get this file better do a little research on torrent d/l's . I have updated my prior gps's this way (garmin models) hasn't cost me a dime to have the newest map set
