I went though the academy in February and the company my mentor works for, an owner/op company who hauls for Swift, offered me a job. My good friend also works for this company and I was promised around 1000 a week if my truck did around 5000 miles as a team.
Well, I took the job and took a BIG hit. Now I do not get reimbursed for the training. I have to pay half in a settlement, we have to pay for the majority of the fuel, I have to do my own taxes, and no health insurance.
The main reason I want out is that we dont see what we get paid for. We ran 5700 miles with a few 40,000 lbs loads and I took home around $960. This next week we ran 4 really light FedEx loads, nothing over 15000 lbs, for 4900 paid miles (I calculated at least 5400) and take home $460. Sound fishy?
My friends that I met in the academy all are now doing good running solo. Say what you want about Swift but all I am really looking for is about $600 a week with insurance. I would rather enjoy my time out on the road and live modest than run my balls off and not be sure if im gonna get paid correctly.
Does anyone know if its possible to go back to Swift without having to do the orientation crap and jump through hoops?
Quit Swift right out of school for a different company. Can I go back?

Another thing, ive been with this company for a month and a half and we had a week where we only had 3200 miles and I got paid $190. A team working for Swift would split $1056. HUGE difference!

A very good example of why students should not go Owner op right away. I do not mean that in a deragatory way. 5000 miles is average for a team. Plus as an o/o you do not get paid like a company driver. It is not all according to mileage. You should have brokerage knowledge before running your own authority. There is also a such thing as running too many miles. Once you hit your optimum mileage anything more will start to cost you money. Please give yourself atleast a year or so get used to the lifestyle and how to really drive a truck. Your chances of success will be much greater. Make all your mistakes on someone else's dime.

The O/P did not go o/o. He or she works for an o/o who is leased on to Swift and is finding out the drawbacks to the arrangement. I, too, would suggest staying company for a while straight out of school. It really is a good idea to get an idea of the industry and lifestyle even before going to a small independent. At least with a larger company, there are benefits packages that may not be available otherwise.

Sounds like the op is getting paid a percentage of the load, not mileage pay. And if you don't know what the load paid originally, it's easy to get screwed.

Dont worry Kentry, if ur just starting out, you will be screwed again and again in this industry. Its all lies and b/s and smoke and mirrors. It seems like the pay isnt much better than when I started like 18 years ago and now its all slow trucks, big brother watching everything you do and at times it seems like all of society hates you just because you drive truck. So welcome aboard and sit back and enjoy the ride, believe me, it doesnt get any better
