SSB is not extra channels. It is an option to talk on the lower or upper end of the channel. The Stryker's however have extra bands of channels. Usually the extra bands of channels is on 10 meters (I think). But, I have heard from a lot of people that you never can tell if you don't have a frequency counter. I'm sure someone else on here can explain better than I can. I haven't used a CB in a while.

There ARE NO "extra" channels for CB radio. There are 40 channels in ONE preselected band. There are no legal additional bands for CB! What you should be MOST sure of is where you ARE transmitting and that you ARE on the CB band. Also any radio that 1) has "bands" of channels is ILLEGAL out of the box for CB. 2) If it has NO certification sticker or FCC certification number it is an ILLEGAL radio not to be used on CB. 3) By transmitting on what you think are "extra" channels, you are subjecting yourself to fines of $10,000 PER occurance. And the licensed hams who are ASSIGNED these "channels" (as CBers call them) [amateur radio HAS no "channels"; they are 'frequency assignments'] will "assist" you in receiving one of those unfriendly letters from FCC! While the hams are not guilty of causing all CB complaints, there are quite a few FCC actions against CBers over the last year---including those operating IN, around, ON, or interfering WITH 10, 12---even 15 Meter bands!
I invite you to visit:
www.fcc.gov/eb/AmateurActions/Welcome/html
If the link doesn't work just go to www.fcc.gov/eb then scroll down on the left side to "Amateur Actions".
Here you will find a LARGE list of CBERS (and hams, too) who think that it is OK to operate a radio just anyway they want!!!! Considering the CB "myth" that FCC doesn't care about CBers and the fact you got licensed services AND non-CB consumers complaining, the list is sort of large.
Here are a couple:

Re: WARNING FOR UNLICENSED RADIO OPERATION
EB-10-GB-0045
Dear Mr. Sedwick:
It has come to the attention of the Federal Communications Commission that
at various times in the last several months operation of your CB radio has
been interfering with communications in the 10 and 12 meter bands, for
which a license is required.
The Commission's rules require that you operate your CB station with an
FCC certified CB transmitter. The rules also prohibit the use of external
radiofrequency power amplifiers (sometimes called linears or linear
amplifiers). The rules further provide that use of a non-certified CB
transmitter and/or a power amplifier voids your authority to operate the
station."
Operation of radio transmitting equipment without a valid FCC
authorization is a violation of Section 301 of the Communications Act of
1934, as amended, and may subject the responsible parties to substantial
monetary forfeitures, in rem arrest action against the offending radio
equipment, and criminal sanctions including imprisonment. Because
unlicensed operation creates a danger of interference to important radio
communications services and may subject the operator to severe penalties,
this warning emphasizes the importance of complying strictly with these
legal requirements.
ANY UNAUTHORIZED OPERATION OF THIS RADIO STATION MUST CEASE IMMEDIATELY.
You have ten (10) days from the date of receipt of this warning to respond
to this office. The response must contain a statement of the specific
action(s) taken to ensure compliance with the Commission's rules and
should include a time line for completion of any pending corrective
action(s). You are directed to support your response with a signed and
dated affidavit or declaration under penalty of perjury, verifying the
truth and accuracy of the information submitted in your response. Your
response should be sent to: 1270 Fairfield Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325 and
reference the listed case number.
In an inquiry of this type we are required to notify you that under the
Privacy Act of 1974, 5 U.S.C. S: 552a(e)(3), the Commission's staff will
use all relevant information before it, including information you disclose
in your reply, to determine what, if any, enforcement action is warranted
in this matter.
You may contact me at 717-338-2577 should you wish to discuss this matter.

So you can see that it COULD be a problem if you should get caught on what you think are "extra" channels. They may appear to be empty (to you), but they ARE assigned and some of them are NOT used for voice transmissions, but for digital and data modes that your radio won't decode as being used. But YOUR AM (usually) transmissions will stand out like a sore thumb, and BOY! Do the hams ever get MAD over it!!
They'll even go out and "stalk" truckers----and you won't even KNOW about it until you get an official letter from FCC. Don't think if you're mobile, "they can't find me!" That's another CB myth that's been cured by the computer age!
I posted all this so you won't get into trouble using myths and untrained CB legend.
Sideband is sort of like splitting a potato into 3 parts: carrier. Upper sideband, Lower sideband. By eliminating the carrier you are essentially delivering ALL your audio "punch" to the other station. It also takes up less space--like traveling thru a narrower tunnel. And the receiving station has to be able to 're-insert' this carrier so as to decode the audio.
In a nut shell, that's IT! (IT's also why, if you DON'T have a sideband detector, it sounds like Donald Duck!). So Sideband is NOT "extra" channels. SSB is also LEGAL for CB--so long as it stays WITHIN the 40 channels.
I urge you to go the the link and read the enforcement page at FCC.gov.
There's a bunch about CBers interfering with consumer electronics and "leenyars" (power amplifiers--also illegal for CB radio)as well as 10 Meter intruders.
It may change how you feel about having "extra" channels!!

OK ..
Now SSB is nothing but the filtering of a AM signal into its 3 parts.
AM is a upper/lower sidband and the carrer that they originate from.
NOW some CBers install ILLEGAL frequencies sometimes called upper and lower channels these have nothing to do with SSB but are radio frequencies asigned to others NOT CB.
AS A RULE ...... most SSB on CB is on ch 38 LSB (27.385 mhz)
There is a space above and below CB which ILLEGAL users call freebands use them at your own risk.
Also be aware there are HAM BANDS from 24.900 - 25.000 mhz and 28.000 - 29.700 mhz some EXPORT radios will go there ...... unless you have a ham license this is not a good idea. The FCC is monitoring and is writing fines .... -
Thanks for all the info. If FCC is doin such a great job though, why don't those yeah-hoos down south on ch 6 and 11 ever get busted with their 100,000 watt radios? It can't be THAT hard for FCC to catch em!!!
-
MY OPINION .....
As long as it's between ch-1 and ch-40 the FCC will only go after people who cause a problem NOW .....If someone goes into the ham bands your asking to get caught ....
This is only my OPINION but it you look at FCC busts it looks that way ....
