That is exactly what I thought happened. That scale will let traffic back up onto the Catawba bridge and leave the scale open. This in not the first bad accident to happen there. I saw a driver have to get cut out of his truck once there.
I used to cross that scale twice a day for several years. I got caught in a backup with the traffic stopped on the north end of the bridge one day. There was one truck behind me. The bad accident I saw had just happened two weeks before. I was watching my mirrors for anyone dropping off the hill too fast. I sae a truck come off the hill at a high rate of speed toward the line. I dropped the clutch and away I went around the line of trucks. I wasn't about to be a sandwich.
It so happened a DOT bear was behind the truck behind me. He followed me past the scales, and pulled me over. He wanted to know why I went by the scales. I told him I should never have stopped in the first place because of the danger of sitting in the road, and had I known the traffic would have stopped, I would have kept on going. I also said I thought I did the safest thing, as the truck coming off the hill was going way too fast, and I had seen the bad wreck two weeks ago and did not want that to happen to me.
I was very nice to him the whole time, and told him if he felt I needed a ticket I would understand, but I did what I felt was safe for me. He just told me to bypass the scales next time the trucks were backed onto the road, and have a nice day.soon2betrucking, The Challenger and dollylama Thank this. -
yeah stranger i head that this wasnt the first accident in this location...i guess it would be easy to put the blame on the state for not closing the scale when it backs up tooo much... some states have the signs that say to bypass when ramp is full... i would imagine that no ticket would be issued in a situation such as this one for blowing by the scale.
does make one think tho, next time i come upon a scale with a big back up---which u can usually hear about on the cb before u get to it, about by-passing it... -
That is the Bowling Familys bus,I am very good personal friends with them.Mike Bowling is the group owner and he was in the front Buddy Seat.He is severly hurt, fractured skull, brain injury and numerous other injuries, his wife Kelly has a hurt back and fractured ankle, their 6 year old daughter Katelynne is also hurt with facial lacerations and broke collar bone.Kellys Sister Terah has a broken arm and possibly some ribs broke,Spencer their Piano Player has a broke ankle also.Their driver had minor injuries.10 poeple on the bus and all were injured with 3 being serious,Mike Critically injured.
I was with them 2 weekends ago down in Broken Bow,Ok.Mike had asked me to drive the bus due to his driver not being very good.I turned him down.....sure wish i would have took it now. They are great people.they are a Southern Gospel group and do alot of good things.soon2betrucking Thanks this. -
simplyred1962 Betty Boop, One Bodacious Babe!!!
Charge the DOT and the individual officers for keeping the weigh station open, and letting the truck traffic back up onto the interstate!!!
BUT, that won't happen. Everyone injured in the accident will have to sue them, themselves.
We often worry about just such a thing happening, because the dumb-butts in the weigh station don't have enough sense to close down when trucks are backed up ONTO the interstate, waiting to get in.
SENSELESS, and this accident could have been avoided!!!!

thoughts and prayers go out to the family' so sad this close to the 4th and this happens to them.
simplyred1962 Thanks this. -
And this whole accident was caused because DOT wants to take very truck in and weigh them just so they feel all nice and warm inside. I hope the DOT officers that were running that scale house get in trouble for that and somehow get firee or something for being A holes and almost killing these people.
They should probably put a sign up at that scale that says bypass scale if traffic is at this point!!!simplyred1962 Thanks this. -
Mike and Kelly are being released to go home tomorow. No surgery for Kelly, body cast for 3 months. Mike is improving and has a long road ahead.
