Then you are elligable to take the test. I am rounding up the cost of getting finger printed, I want to say it is $150 not sure. I don't do well reading out of the manuals, so what I did was go to crist cdl, they have free pratice test. I kept on taking the practice test until I was able to get 100% on all 7 of there test. They have 7 different pratice test. Then I went and took the test.
Gas Hauling is not for all drivers, just like OTR is not for all Gas Haulers. If you have an apptitude for it you can do real well and still have a life outside the truck. Best wishes to you no mattaer what you decide

I just got fingerprinted today for $89.25 here is Iowa and was paid online, so apparently everyone in Iowa pays the same amount. I should have my letter from TSA in about 2 weeks, and I have already passed my DOT test on Hazmat.

Yeah ... especially if you are dropping 2 or 3 products at one time ... all those lines dragged out can get confusing in the dark and all you have to do is mess up one time and then the doo-doo will really hit the fan. I know it's happened to you ... you pull up to an old country store and they have a ULSD tank and a regular tank ... the cars have been running over the manhole covers and the sand on their tires has taken almost all the paint off the covers. The yellow on the ULSD and the white on the Reg look almost exactly the same at might and especially if it is raining. Of course you can stick the tank and see wether your stick comes out with an oily sheen on it to determine which is which but sometimes in the rain it becomes a royal pain. There have been times when I had to grab the cover and bring it into the cab and switch on the dome lights to try and see what color the blasted thing is and then there are the profile sheets with the description of the store layout but some of those things are practically worthless.

2 years ago we had a very experienced driver go to a truck stop on I-95 with a load of ULSD ... dispatch had forgot to leave him a profile sheet for the store in his box ... anyway he finds the truck stop and finds a yellow manhole cover and starts to get ready to drop. At that time a mechanic comes out and tells him that the hole he was going to drop in was not the ULSD tank and to pull around behind the shop and put it in the tank behind the shop. Figuring that surely the mechanic ( it was a new mechanic that had just started working for them the week before) would know what he is talking about ... he follows his instructions and begins dropping behind the shop. He gets a couple of hundred gallons in the tank when the senior shop foreman comes out and has a hissy-fit telling him he is putting the ULSD in the motor oil tank.

Now think about this ... the driver was very experienced ... it wasn't his fault that dispatch forgot to supply him with a profile sheet ... he did not have a key to the dispatch office so he could go in and get one from the file cabinet ... he had never been to this truck stop before ... a mechanic tells him to drop behind the shop and he does (he didn't know the mechanic was a new guy) ... unknowingly dropping it into motor oil. What would have happened to the driver if he had told the mechanic "No, Mr Mechanic, this cover is yellow and I'm gonna drop it in here no matter what you say" ... an what if the mechanic had been right and the driver disobeyed someone who should have known better.

I'll tell you what ... if it had been me ... going to a place I had never been before ... without a profile sheet ... and a mechanic came out and told me where to drop it ... that's exactly what I would have done ... same as anybody else would have done. But this driver was blamed for the insident, written up, given a few days suspension and then had to have a safety person ride around with him for about two weeks while they evaluated his job performance and he's darn lucky he didn't get fired from what he said. This wasn't some new kid off the block, but a conscienceous dedicated driver who was doing his dead level best to do his job the right way ... oh well, ya know what they say "S--- Happens!":smt006

This is one of those situations where you armchair quarterback the driver, and say, you should have thought about calling dispatch since you had the right color manhole, how could the mechanic be right when the manhole was the right color....but in an instant, you go forward and do what the mechanic tells you...in retrospect I bet the driver wishes he had stopped and called dispatch................
when a situation does't add up, time to call dispatch....like I said, I am armchairing the driver, but dumb stuff like this happens.

I paid $17.00 to take the haz-mat test..$78.25 for fingerprinting and will have to pay $12.00 for license,when the letter arrives in the mail..After the months of procrastinating,I finally Got-R-Done!

All right Phantom I guess I will see you up in the N. Augusta racks in about another year and a half lol. Just remember when you become a Gas Hualer driving will only be about 50% of your job. Also first staring out it is going to take you about 6 months to find your routine and start making the real money. I have been avearaging $1200 a week so far this year working 6 days a week, but that is knowing what I am doing. I suggest you go on a 6 night rotation so you can take your time and still make $1000 a week.

As for me I am going up to N. Augusta to help out nextweek, they gauranteed me avearage days pay of last year plus $50 a night extra. I might make less moneybecause I was making less last year due to incompetance but I will chalk it up as tuition to learn something new

I would like to thank the author of this thread and all the contributors since its creation. For the past 6 months or so I've been following and soaking up the info from here.
I'm suppose to start on Wed. morn. Now that I got the job I'm a little nervous...don't know what to expect. How often does having a TWIC card come into play? How often do u get bothered by bums or beggers hauling at night? Once again thanks fellas for the info!!

Blue R U coming on board with Eagle ? If so 100,000 welcomes to you. If not 100,000 welcomes to you as a Gas Hauler. I think you will enjoy pulling out of Charleston, all thoose guys seem like a real close knitt bunch regardless of what carrier you hual for. It is the same way in Savannah we are like an informal faternity. When you go to get your cards activated at Hess Charleston I can tell you from experiance they will want to see your TWIC, don't know about Kinder Morgan Charleston . As for the panhandling goes I would say about 25% of the time you go to an intercity station. What I do is put out my cones and if they cross the barrier I tell them to go away. I was a Drill Sergeant in the Army so I have no problem doing it. If there are Kids with them I am not that cold blooded I will give them a few Dollars, but if they start getting greedey I will just tell them to go away and threaten to call the police.

If I might suggest get the none emergency phone numbers to the police departments. That way if you go into a rough area at night or the we hours of the morning you can call them and let them know you are there. If they are not to busy they usually come by to say hi. They get bored to.

Thanks for the welcome Smoke! I'm joining Eagle...excited and nervous at the same time. I'm gonna miss my freedom as an owner-op but will gladly trade it in for consistant money and benefits without the stress of paying for EVERYTHING! I know its gonna take me awhile to get in a groove but as long as i'm making something I'll be happy.
