What needs to be done to INSIDE of my 959 IF I decide to put a 100 watt linear to it?

    Nothing .......

If you want a linear go buy one that will handle 5 watts of AM and about 25 watts of SSB drive.

There is a base station I talk to on my way home, and if I had a small linear, I could talk a little longer. I've never messed with one, so I don't know what you mean by "handle" 5 watt am, and 25 watt ssb. What kind should i look for then? Does Palomar make a 100 watter? Sorry for my ignorance, but just bein real!!!

Any amp requires a input to produce a output the MAX input to the amp for the MAX output is the amount it will handle.

Lets say your amp at 2 watts puts out 50 watts .....if it is truely linear it should put out 100 watts with 4 watts from the radio and with 6 watts input should show 150 watts .... but in the real world will not look this flat ......

So what you need to do is look up the spects on any amp your looking at to see how much drive it needs for full output and will your radio give you that much power if the amp requires a bit more than your radio will supply for full output THIS IS GOOD ...... you don't want to over drive a amp.

Finals are not cheap so remember to keep a amp cool also .....

Just a note of power .....

Now as for power 100 watts is more than enough I work the world on less that that.

Now most ham radios allow you to adjust the output which i do for my 2 meter station and drive a amp to 125 watts and idle the base radio at about 40 watts .....

Thanks for the simple lesson! Ya, my radio puts out 45 watt on am, so IF I use amp, i'll just turn my "SWR POWER" down right? Thanks again, it was real helpful.

    Hummm ......

I not shure your radio can put out that much My guess is unless it has been modded more like 30 watts ..... Also read the manual and see if that control on that radio will allow you to vary the output ... If it does you have it made .

I had 2 of the 959dx's years ago nice radio.

Thanks again for the info WA4GCH. A radio tech in Avoca, IA. (exit 40 on I-80) "turned and tuned" it up when I first got it. He suggested I put an RFX 75 on it, but I think I'd rather slap a small linear to it. It actually does pretty decent with the Wilson 2000 on it(about 20 miles to the base station), but I'd like JUST a little more distance! Thanks again!

why not just get your ham ticket and a hammy radio? 20 miles is way more than you will ever need to talk on cb
