Log book page retention

I have somewhere just over a year of printed logs in my binder and almost three years on my computer. I grab month or so of printed logs and toss 'em out when it becomes hard to put the new pages in.

If someone has the time and inclination to do an audit on the side of the road, be my guest. I could probably save a bit of time just by printing an audit out of DDL though--I guarantee all my ducks are in a row.

 

I think you've heard my story, but a while back i was workin for weiner and got pulled into the inspection pull off on US58 just west of I85, and the copper asked me for the usual...registration, license, medical card...got this stern sound to his voice as he said "and your looooggggggboooook"....i gave him my medical card and license and registration, told him i had paperless logs....he instantly got this sorry look on his face like he had pulled the wrong guy over. I was out of there almost as soon as he sat down in his car! I think the EOBR may have saved me some money that day...I run "legal" but i am not perfect.

 

Drivers Daily Log , I have personally been using there software since 1998, They keep it updated and resolved any issue I had quickly. Yhey include the States that have different rules than the Feds and also Canada.

The actual way to avoid a problem with the DOT on Bound log books is to scratch out the boo boo'd page and write void on it then redo it on a new page , That way when the officer see's it he may ask you why but atleast he has something to go by and can see that it was a legitimate mistake and wont persue it providing your in compliance on the new page, Taking out a page from a bound book I believe you are right on the fine. even so why give them anymore reason to suspect you or for that matter persue an investigation into any other log books ...lol

 

Well I can't speak for every State, but there is no fine in my State for ripping a bound page out.

 

If you come to Canada you need to keep the previous 14 days.

 

My question is why do drivers get so picky about the 8 day rule?

I keep the whole freaking 28-31 days plus the next 7 or 8 for the start of the next month in my binder that holds those loose leaf logs!

SO WHAT! Big freaking deal! You have already turned in that last month to the company, correct? They should have already passed YOUR inspection so that the company and DOT doesn't crap in your Wheaties. Correct?

So whats the deal about having more than 8 days? The OLD bound log books had 31 days in them and we handed them to the DOT with it almost filled out even when drivers did the silly fold the pages over under the illusion that a DOT wouldn't open them up but they do! LOL!

If you think that handing a DOT a book with more than 8 days is going to get you in trouble then you've been listening to truck drivers to much, Like that $500 a page fine for torn out pages! Another BS Rumor made up by someone who bogarted that thing to much! Or like Ca. fines ALL start at $1500! ROFLMAO!

As I said if your book was good to begin with, whats the problem? IT'S GOOD! Quit stressing so much or you'll be found on the side of the road dead from a stroke!

As I said way back in this thread I keep my logs for ever! It's a tax thing! I keep my complete month in the binder. I start each month on day 1 in the recap and the day matches the recap. It is NOT a DOT rule that they match but I do as it's a lot easier to keep the book looking good so that when Diesel Bear asks for it he'll know right off the bat that it's going to look and figure out good! Then if it's at the middle of the month and he's holding a loose leaf book and the whole month is there and it's neat and matches with any receipts he'll look, do some in the head figuring and hand it back to me with a "looks good to me" and we get on with the rest of the L-1 through L-3 inspection!

As I said earlier when the end of the month comes around I start with the date of the 1st and the recap of Day 1 and when day 8 or the 8th hits I remove the last month and it goes into another folder with the rest of the year so that it's all together for that oh so fun time when I have to add all my days out for the per diem deduction and then put that binder in the box in the attic and the saved file from Drivers Daily Log goes in the fire proof safe in the closet.

And I'll rant a little bit more. Someone said to delete the computer DDL files. WHY? You can keep digital files the same as paper! I have all my DDL files going back to when they started up the new rules. My others got lost as I used to keep everything on an external HDD and well it got dropped and shattered the disks! That was a quick lesson on better backups!And I love these new solid state drives and that is a hint you ned to think about on your next laptop purchase! Why delete records you need! If they are good what are you worrying about? The company has the last 6 on you for an audit so whats the deal? You have yours for IRS! Just keep them for life as that 7 year rumor aint true as the IRS can go as far back as they want! I Know, my last was for 3 years back to 10! I don't recommend that for a fun time! It's highly overrated!

To sum it all up.
**Keep the silly logs together as they are worth MONEY to you at tax time! Don't throw them away!
**They should have been legal anyway so why are you "hiding" them?
**Hand a month to a DOT officer and he'll probably look at 1-8 days and quit! He KNOWS you aren't going to hand him something you'll regret, well except for those that are wasting good air the mentally handicapped need to live on like the one DB told us about!

Canada: I have no idea. They don't like my old Army type up there! You know the 1st and 2nd amendment supporter!
so I just don't bother with their libtard socialist country!

There is no Regulation that your logs have to be bound nor is their a regulation that a bound book has to have 31 pages in them. Makes no difference how many pages you tear out as long as you have the last 7 plus the day your driving on.
