JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY, Can teams split there driving time like 5 on and 5 off and be legal about it? or must one driver at a time complete his duty time, then the next driver takes over? How does it really work? Thanks

No you can't split like that anymore. Well you can it's just that in order to "stop" your clock you would have to be in the sleeper berth for 8 hours. You're better off as a team to have 1 person drive 10 hours you stop for fuel and food, the person driving logs the fuel and then goes off duty. The other driver would then take over for 10 hours etc... that way the truck doesnt stop rolling each driver gets their rest and you both can eat and shower at the same time.

My brother who had driven teams for years, said they couldn't log that way anymore, although I guess most of the older drivers still run that way. Like he said some guys like the 10on 10off, but for alot of guys it's about impossible to sleep more then a 4-5 hours at a time in the back of a moving truck so they like 5on 5off. I know my bladder couldn't let me sleep 8-10 hours in the back of a moving truck.

I use to just do the 10 on 10 off. Made it easy and one of us always got a 34 reset in every week in CA waiting for our load out of Northern CA or Yuma. Always worked out awesome and we ran one hell of a lot of miles in 13 weeks. (92K)

We might have ran 5 and 5's for seven years. It is not legal. It is the best and safest way to team though. We ran 10's for a week and got a ticket for sitting in the passenger seat. After that we might have went to 5 and 5's. It can be done but you must stay on top of it. I don't condone illegal behavior but I was taught running 5 and 5's back in the day and might still. Several DOT officers prefer this too because they might have mentioned it to us. I guess while we still have non-truckers sitting in their anti-idling offices this is the best they are going to come up with. Will never be changed back because then someone will have to admit a mistake.

Question for someone new to the business I going to get my CDL ina few months and I was going to drive for my local grain eleavtor and do they have to do logbooks becuase I heard if it is in a certain area or radius of the company that you don't have to doa log book or is haul farm commities have different laws than OTR drivers becuase at this grain eleavtor the drivers are paid by the hour and percent or mile so if when the do , do logbooks its more for DOT than payment.
