I drive a company Volvo 630. It has a Meritor 10-speed.
The truck is hard to get to go into any gear from neutral. I try to be easy with it, but I have struggled for up to 30 seconds to get the thing into any gear. once it is in a gear I can get it into another one pretty easily. This is with the truck warmed up, not cold.
When I do get it to slide into gear the truck shudders, as if the clutch isn't all the way in. I have written it up on the shop ticket, but the guys just tell me it's O.K. and not to worry about it.
Is this something that they need to work on (I can go to a higher source on the maintenance) or is it truly O.K.?
Thanks,
Dave

Well I would adjust the clutch brake, but if I was real busy it wouldn't be real high on my priority list. It's a little hard on things, but not that bad.
The clutch brake might also be bad. They make a 2 piece replacement that you can install without removing the transmission, but it is a real PIA to get the old one piece one out.
To tell you the truth I seem to find more trucks that are running around with out of adjustment or defective clutch brakes than I do properly functioning ones. -
try to drop it into gear just before the truck comes to a complete stop. It always makes it easier for me.

that's it right there. if your coming to a stop you should shift into gear before you stop.
And lets say you just started the truck and putting it into gear to roll, do you press the clutch all the way to the floor hold for a sec or 2 then put it in gear? -
clutch brake is out of adjustment or broken,a simple clutch adjustment usually cures it. Wingfoot @ most Pilot's do it for about $25.00.

Just so new people do not use the wrong term.
Trans brake is for an automatic transmission. It's used by drag racers so they can launch at a higher RPM.
Big trucks have a clutch brake. It's used by pressing the clutch all the way to the floor. It stops the transmission from spinning when the truck has stopped. This allows you to put it in gear.123456 and cadillacdude1975 Thank this.
