hay guys i have learned a few things from this site and have a new ??? for you guys..i have a 1997 freightliner dump with a cummins mll and rto14709 trans, i know my oil,water,air,and power streeging filters but is there anymore that i should be aware of oil coolers i heard people talk about them, or anything thats part of the normal maint. that i should know of .when does a oil cooler need changeing? also i took my air dryer apart to get a filter part numb. and to my surprise there was no filter in there should it be???thanks mike
i hope this dont sound stuip but i just want to makesure i keep things working

Oil coolers don't really require any special preventive maintenance, but the common symptom is filling the radiator with oil sludge when one of the oil tubes inside it cracks..
There's a few different types of air-dryers on the market.. The one on my truck hasn't been touched in 12 years and has never gave trouble..
It's not the one with the little spin-on filter.. I haven't had one of those yet so I don't know about them..
I've heard the kind like I have uses some kind of cartridge that's full of what looks like little metal bb's, and if it ever fails they will invade your whole air system creating one hell of a mess..
I probably need to check mine out, but never do think about it since it doesn't gives me any reason.. -
If you have an AD9 dryer, there is a cartridge inside. Go to your dealer and with your serial number he can give you a print out of the air dryer and the serviceable parts.
Oil coolers, are dated and should be replaced if over ten years old, IF and I mean IF you are doing a repair and have it out or IF you have a major bearing failure, and it filler the system with metal particles. There is no reason to change an oil cooler as a maintenance item. -
usually with an ad9 dryer your just get a reman and usually change if you have alot of oil blowby from the compressor or alot of water in the tanks, if in which you do, do a compressor blow out test to make sure your compressor isnt blowing to much oil and it will plug the new dryer,
for the test, from what i remember, you get the engine up to temp, then take off the discharge line, put a piece of paper up to it when someone is reving the eng up to 1800 for 1 minute. If the oil is more then 2 inches then it will fail the test. I can get the card and verify that if someone needs -
Thats the test. If the diameter of the cirlce on the card is greater than 2 inches then its time for a new compressor. Or if you have oil dripping from the card
