Ahhh the good old " you need experience before we touch you" routine. Very short sighted of companies but its how they operate.

It'll be quite a risk to get kitted out with the trailer and insurance etc to find out its not the job for you.

Have you tried any of the employment agencies that supply temp drivers to trucking firms. Contact a few of them, they might be in a position to train you via you going with a driver already working for them on containers. They will then be able to hire you out to these companies, you get paid, you get experience, the companies get to know you and you arent shelling out thousands of dollars ?

    Its just a thought

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I laughed out loud when I came across this, fact one, there is absoulelty no experience required when hauling Containers, You only have to want to make no money doing it. Go into the CN Intermodal Terminal in Brampton and Join the milling throng their waiting to drop off their outbound load and then wait again for their backhaul load. Most drivers are working for next to nothing, 15 to 25 per load, usually with 20 foot b trains and on some of the worst equipment on the road. Because of the demmurrge policy of the railway, cans coming in can only be stored for there for two days before being charged up to 450 a day storage, now around the Intermodal terminal and CP is just down the street, and no better by the way, there are the bottom feeders who will store those containers for a fraction of the price in order to have it off railway propery, these bottom feeders are the ones to pay their drivers far less and they don't care about them at all, these poor fellas and it does not matter what nationality they are, do not know what hit them. The only way in Canada to make money on Containers is to have one going to Vancouver that missed the train. Otherwise Doublestack trains are far cheaper so long haul is out.
