Had to recert. I drive a truck with a 8V71 and up around 1800-2000rpms this truck screems. I'm concerned about my hearing and would consider wearing protection. I understand several state don't allow you to cover your ears. But come on, sitting next to a screaming detorit will make my ear's ring at the end of the day. Not to mention losing hearing. Any suggestions? By the way, all the exhuast has been updated and replaced.

Try ear plugs - they were acceptable when I was standing next to a pair of screaming J79's...

    F4E Phantom J79's.

I drove a 318, or commonly known as an 8V71, for a couple of years. I now have a constant ringing in the ears, as my truck had gutted mufflers. That thing would sing to you from 2100 to 2400 RPM. It and an old 250 ruined my ears. Use a moldable soft sponge earplug when you drive. You can still hear well enough, but the dangerous noise will be filtered out. I have to sleep with the TV on to drown out the ringing. Don't let this happen to you.

Thanks. Was considering the soft ear plugs. Figgured the cops wouldn't see them and write me up.

They do make hearing protection that is made from a mold of your own ear. I had a truck tire blow up about 1.5 feet from my right ear so I have severe Tinnitus. I use ear plugs in both ears working with Pneumatic tankers or my ears would ring so bad at night I wouldn't sleep. I also drove Euclids with the 16v-71 engines in them and used ear plugs AND ear muffs to keep the damage down.
