Hello All. My youngest will soon be off on his own and my wife and I are contemplating renting out our house and team driving. We have been reading the various posts here and have a taste of some of the good and a lot of the bad.
What we haven't seen is much about other couples experiences do the team otr thing. We would very much like to hear some experiences if you are out there. Thanks.

I have never driven team, I am not a empty nester, And I have never really been over the road,...(I am a local driver)
However I know that Schnider used to advertise for folks like you, I don't know if they are running their training program anymore or not,..
If I were in your shoes I might try calling them,.. -
Nor are you a line-haul driver..lol..walleye Thanks this.

Don't rent the house out, wait till you have a year or 2 under your belt. You may only last a few weeks, then you have a problem. if you can't make enought to keep the house then why bother to go into this business.
-
That could work if the house is paid for. I have owned rental property before and its not something that can be done easily from afar. I would look for smaller team reefer companies that run to the west coast and back rather than irregular route OTR to get your feet wet.

And I am perfectly fine with that!!,....jakebrake12 Thanks this.

Thanks for the advice guys. Actually we are renting to my daughter, so not much concern with respect to that.

My wife and I hit the road together (she doesn't have a CDL but she is a heck of a navigator) when our nest became empty. Under the conditions I was driving under at the time (running too many miles for too little a mile) it was not fun. It is one thing to do it alone but to subject my wife to the OTR lifestyle was a little selfish. I am one of those obsessive drivers who has to get there early.
Then came grandchildren. So if you have a few years to go see the country and get paid for it, knock yourselves out. Try finding a school that will allow you to train in the same truck. Most schools won't allow it but as a veteran driving instructor I have done it with good results. Especially when the wife does better than the hubby. That is a huge motivation for the feller.
When the grandchildren come, you will have enough miles under your belt to get some regional or local job that will allow you to do your grandparenting when the time comes. -
Just remember that the OTR lifestyle may be a shock to your system... I'd say 80-90% of the people who try this life don't stick with it more than a few years. It's hard on the body and tough on relationships in many cases. I had a female co-driver years ago and we used to joke that we argued so much you'd think we were married... hell we didn't even sleep together!

My wife is on the truck full time with me and it works well for us. (we still like each other)
If there are any and I do mean ANY problems in your marriage, You'll know within a month or two what they are.
If you've never driven a truck over the road before...You're gonna get a fast hard lesson in reality...It ain't a paid vacation! You're probably not gonna last a year out here.
I'm not tryin' to poop in your breakfast, I'm just telling you how it usually goes for bright eyed retirees that think they're gonna "See The Country and Get Paid!"
Have a backup plan.
