I have been with Roehl for nearly 3 years, the last as a O/O that went outside of Roehl and bought a truck. When I started nearly 3 years ago Roehl seemed to be much more driver friendly. Latley I have really seen changes that have began to force me to look at taking my truck elsewhere. A big differnce is the quality of freight. Roehl used to haul alot of what I would consider good freight. We would haul for good shippers, several loads would be good weights. Now it seems as that all I get are 42000lbs or more and it always seems to be going to somewhere off the normal path. I can point out two accounts that I would always haul to get back to Texas, Ikea and JC penny's. These would normally be around 30000lbs and were very good runs. Roehls had lost both this past year. Homedepot loads have become nearly non existant. Roehls equipent is getting older and junkier. When I started you never saw a tractor over 500,000 miles. Look at all the trucks in the 700,000 and 800,000 range. Every terminal has mutiple drivers complaning about A/c.
Most companies are now hiring and giving back pay the drivers lost during the reccession. NOT ROEHL. I asked about increasing the mileage pay to the O/O's and was told it would not happen. The past 5 times I have requested detention I have been turned down. I am tired of working for free for Roehl. They always try to use my truck as a local truck because they allow thier homtime drivers to just drop the frieght in Garland and then get me to deliver it when I launch. They normally tell me if I want a good load the planners need me to do the 30 mile loads first.
I have began looking and have found that what they compensate me is really low compared to other companies. Even the huge carrier Schnieder has a better O/O program than I am currently on with Roehl. They even guarntee detention after 2 hours, not like Roehls vague answers when I ask why I don't receive it. I used to haul 2-3 Walmart loads that were drop and hooks every cycle I was out. Now I have been lucky to see one every cycle and the past 2 I have had to go elsewhere to find a empty.
Don't know what is happening but it is getting worse everytime I launch. I think my time at Roehl is quickly coming to a end. I have really tried, I have given them nearly 3 years.![]()

Sorry, Etch...but Roehl is/has been bad to alot of us...move on man. You have the experience and your own truck...the opportunities are unlimited for you.

I have been seeing the same changes, especially in the last year. I used to drop and hook about 75% of the time now its probably less than 25%, also used to have a preplan before delivery about half the time, now I sit at least a few hours between almost every load. I would have to do a 34hr. reset after 6 days because I had used up my 70. Now I have layover on most weekends. I was next to a truck in Gary that has the same faded fenders and hood that mine has but his headlight lenses were clear (mine are cloudy). I asked him how he got them so clear and he told me the truck had just a few thousand miles on it (just off the line at Marshfield), how will that one look in four years?
Took a weeks vacation that started on a Wednesday but didn't get home until Friday and on and on it goes.
This company has so many good, hard working people in almost all areas that I can't understand why it is not a great place to work. I sometimes wonder if Roehl looks at the way Swift ,CRST, CR England and some of its other competitors run there companies and is trying to move in the same direction. -
We have seen some of this too. Now to decide if it is the company itself, or if it was the downturn of the economy....

Im currently no longer Roehl employed either. Trying to look for something else. Roehl was my first employer and when I first went there all I heard was good things. Well most obviously aint true. The best part about Roehl is the hometime fleets. If you dont need that then there isnt anything Roehl has to offer that other companies cant beat.

Etch, I've seen the Schneider O/O system, its awesome, you get on your computer grab the load YOU want and do it. If you don't want to run you don't have to.

I am really looking at thier choice program, it looks really good and the money is better than Roehl offers. Schinieder has been great in all our conversations.RockyWI, Everett and The Challenger Thank this.

As I predicted more and more drivers with over 1 year experience are seeing what I have been saying. Roehl has changed even when hubby and I were there. I can count on one hand the number of Roehl trucks we see on the road on the lanes that I know we ran. I wonder how many of the refeer accounts were lost because Roehl couldn't accommodate them. How many teams are left there. I know they didn't run us as a team.

I'm wondering if we've got new planners. Two out of the last three trips have been the most poorly planned I have seen since I started two years ago. This last one they sent out a plan for the next driver even though they knew the load I was on to get home had been pushed out almost twentyfour hours. Then they got in a panic, blew off the delivery of the load I picked up and wanted me out of the truck as soon as I got back to East St. Louis. Nothing mattered to them other than getting the next driver into the truck and over to Kraft. If you have ever been there, you know how long you can wait if you miss your appointment. My point is that I'm not seeing a lack of freight. I'm seeing a lot of poor or no planning. This is just the latest example.
