Hi all. Im not new to the trucking, i was an owner operator from 1983 to 1992. I went back to school and got caught up on everything ive missed since. The problem is now, i cant get anyone to hire me because of no recent exp. I think thats bull , but whatever, the insurance companys must run everything. I know i could get a job with one of the driver factorys if i want to be put with a trainer, but not if there is any other way. Is it this bad if you start out as an owner operator too. Any suggestions? For the most part im just ranting, Thanks

I would try the smaller mom and pop companies. You shouldn't have a problem. Man you are going to see a lot of changes once you get back out on the road! It's going to be like time traveling! Iowa is a good place to live if you are a trucker. It's for the most part right in the middle of everything. You should have a pretty good selection. Good luck to you and welcome back to the wonderful world of truckin!

Yeah thats been the idea so far, but everyone of them wanted to hire me, but after they talked to their insurance companys it was a no go. I was gonna start with Cliff Veismann tank line, but he lost his contract, and now has 10 guys with nothing to do. Oberg freight want to talk with me, have you ever heard of them? Im sure things have changed, but i can still drive. Thanks

:msad:I'm in the same boat. But I was only off the road for six years. I did get a job with a rinky outfit out of Winchester Va, I won't mention names as I don't need to piss anyone off. He was the only one that would hire me with out recent experience, and he put me in a truck without even a road test. Later I learned that he only hires drivers with a problem or something that prevents them from getting with better companies. That way he can drive them into the ground. Well, He got me in some trouble. He warned all of his drivers not go through any scales. His loads are always heavy, the plate expired while I was out, and my log book was not right, and I suck at cheating. Anyway I got lost trying to go around the SB I-83 scale in Maryland, Got stuck in the middle of the night on a little one lane mountain road and and got caught by DOT. Well I got out of all the tickets but now I am afraid of the PSP. I have only had two inspections but they racked me up with 20 violations in this one inspection. The truck was towed due to me being put out of service. I had no where to go and no one from the company was available to come and get me. I called my wife and she drove 3 hours to pick me up. I called the owner and quit and told him that no one would ever pressure me to do something that stupid again. I worked for him for 2.5 months. Now I am going back to school hoping I can get with a company that will at least let me take a 10 hour break. Anyone know who I should talk to after school? By the way I will be attending Blue Ridge Community College Commercial Driving School, Weyers Cave VA for 5 weeks ending in October.

You'll never find a job unless you go knocking on doors... calling the big guys won't get it done. And no one will call you...

Crosby will probably pick you up. I ran for them for 7 months and it's pretty much the same, no 10 hour break unless they are short on freight. A LOT of northeast, Vulva 670's and a few Pete 386's for the folks who were there for some time. Nobody wants the Petes because of the turning radius and the weight. If you run for Crosby, and tell them that you will not run illegal, you might find yourself sitting a LOT. When I left in June, they still had a buttload of trashy beatup dry trailers that might get you nailed, but someone told me they were trying to sell those off.

If you can fog a mirror, and can drive reasonably good, they are off exit 235 on I81 (Weyers Cave/Mt Sidney). Start at .36/mi, .38 for curtainside, .41 for reefers (DLS Logistics). Extra money for store runs (HomeGoods/Marshalls). Avg 2300mi/wk slow, 2800-3000/wk when it's busy.
