Here's my situation. I am looking to get into driving OTR in the next six to eight months. I am currently employed driving for a beverage distributor driving both 48ft and 32ft dry vans. My main question is this, since I obtained my class A license through and in-house training program with this company instead of a conventional truck driving school, is this going to hamper my ability to obtain a OTR job? Or, am I going to have to attend some type conventional school? Thank you.

How long have you been driving for? Why would you want to drive OTR if you already have a local job? Do you not have a family you would like to see everyday and sleep in your own bed at night? Most drivers would rather be in your situation right now vs. being gone OTR.

If you have a clean record and a little time behind the wheel then you should not have a problem with most carriers. Some are peculiar though and may have specific requirements for past training. All in all you should not have much of an issue.

Two items of importance though are the type transmission you have been using and if you are certified for air brakes. Some of the OTR companies are running automatics but most are still manual transmissions.

    Good luck!

It's not that I'm tired of being home at night, it's that I'm tired of having to work the thousand cases a day that I deliver for what amounts to mediocre pay.

As far as experience I currently have over six months, by the time I'm looking at switching I'll have over a year. Transmission wise our fleet has a little bit of everything but mostly it's been split 10's and Automatics on the smaller trucks.

I would have to disagree. Without recent OTR or a recent Grad many companies will not hire you for OTR without a refresher course. Even if you are driving local. Insurance has changed a lot of things.
