    Where the truck is

NDBADLANDS, I mean no disrespect here but cpape and JimTheHut are quite correct here.

Now I feel I can speak to you on your level because like you, I'm not a trucker yet. I've spent 7 months researching this industry. Heck, I even went OTR for a straight month with my...get this.....EX WIFE!!! (a story in itself guys...lol) to see if this was what I wanted and could do. Upon my return I promptly sold my 4x4 work truck to pay for school.

When I first saw cpape's inquiry looking for drivers I approached him and asked if he hired students. He was right up front and said he'd prefer 1 year OTR experience. He was right upfront about not being comfortable with a recent school grad taking his VERY expensive equipment on the road. Man, you gotta respect that!!

So did I take this a put down? Heck NO!! I took it as a challenge because you know? He's 100% right for HIS comfort level. He wasn't insulting me. He was stating HIS needs. So I kept right on applying and searching for a start in this business. Well, tomorrow morning I leave for orientation. Even though cpape and I haven't spoken all that much, as a self employed guy all my life, I instantly recognized he'd be the kind of guy I'd LIKE to work with. A real professional who KNOWS what his criteria are and STICKS to them. Just as I did in my business.

So, I'm gonna get that 1 year OTR and keep in touch with him over that time. Why, because I'm not a trucker "wannabe", I'm a trucker "gonna-be"! I won't accept anything less now. So will I be the kind of trucker a year from now he'd hire? Maybe, maybe not. But I'll work my butt off to be. And, I might find the company I'm gonna drive for is great and I'll just stick with them. And he'll never get the chance to find out....LOL (sorry cpape, I couldn't resist)...LOL

Anyway, these guys are right about how you're looking at things. It's pretty simple really. We have but two choices every day we wake up. Am I going to be positive or negative today? Period! Every one of us faces some sort of rejection everyday. You can either be bitter about it (negative) or take it as a lesson that you need to dig deeper, work harder and grow (positive). The choice, as it is for all of us...is yours and yours alone.

Take all that energy you seem to have and make it work for you. Keep plugging away brother until you can come here and say...AH HA!!! Take a look at me now!

    Just my 2 cents

All the best to you! :biggrin_25514:

I have been driving for a living since I graduated high school. I started off in a flatbed Ford straight job for a small company that I was working for part time in the warehouse in the work study program. They gave me the keys and I just got in it and drove. That was 1987 in the fall of 1989 I started working for a small trucking company and left that company in 2005 when I moved to Texas. I only drove straight trucks at this job. The owner of the company came to my home inspection and my wedding. We still talk today and he would put me back in a truck if I found myself back in Jersey. This is what I like about small company's. I now work for another small company that in the fall of 2008 they trained me in there 18 wheeler, got my class a and took out a $ 50,000 loan to get me my own rig. Unfortunately the company we were hauling for dropped us in August of last year and the rig was repoed a few moths ago. Now I have a class a with less than a year experience. The only company's that will hire me will be those big company's.

My point is that if you have a positive attitude it will show and employers will see that. I'm not saying that I don't ##### and moan ( I'm a driver ), but I show up everyday and do my job and like it most days.

Jimthehut--I am not sure that we have a hard and fast rule for the age of ind cont trucks. Mostly we don't want a truck that is going to break down. Looking presentable is also a must. The only downside I see is that living in Central OH, you are probably a Buckeyes fan. GO HAWKS! Hopefully, we can end your string of Big 10 dominance. If you have more questions let me know.

I have a thread wondering why drivers like the idea of lease purchase so much.

Chralb--get that year, move to Dubuque, and we'll teach you how to haul the high, wide and heavy ones. Regardless of where you end up, you will do fine.

Yes, I agree with what your saying, and Cpape has my respect also. I will be honest my negative/positive attitude varies from time to time. I am a positive person but I have a hard time with alot of what I read about all sides of the business.

I need to not post when I am frustrated by what particular threads I read

All the best to also in your new job.

Yes I am a buckeye fan, but I am also a Big Ten Fan. So when you are not playing the Bucks, I root for all of the Big Ten Teams. I will have to work on rooting for Nebraska though.

I will check out your thread on Lease purchase. I have been looking in to that as well. I like to do my research before I jump into anything.

    Thanks for your response!

Hi all- Well I just came to this forum and have a general question about being hired. I drove for Schnieder from 10/97 to about 11/99 or so as I remember and then for Werner from 11/02 thru 7/03 there abouts. My problem is that I am almost 63 years old and havn't driven for 7+ years. Do any of you think I could be hired?
