My Volvo has been feeling pretty loosey goosey lately. I can't pinpoint exactly what's wrong with it. Today while travelling on 287 towards Fort Worth, I had large and unexpected deviation(towards the shoulder thankfully) that scared the ever-living crap outta me. Took a while to get it to stop wobbling. Pulled over and checked the treads and the steering system. Can't find a thing wrong with it. I chalked it up to the wind, but it didn't seem that windy out. I also notice I get slip slidey around certain pavement surfaces but not others.

Good chance you've got problems with the steering linkage.
Have a shop check it. -
See if there is any play in the linkage or steering wheel. Have you switched trailers lately? Sometimes a bad trailer can cause the cab to swerve. Volvo's are a real "floaty" truck and you will notice more little things. I had a brand new volvo and the cab slid off the body mounts. Might want to check that too. Could be something serious or it could be something as simple as ruts in the road.

Im with Chompi on the ruts in the road. Ive run 287 alot back and forth to amarillo in my volvo, and there is a stretch of road both north and south that really gets the truck moving towards the shoulder, if I remember right its on the south bound side that is the worse, made me nervous the first time too....BIgT

gear box could be going out too

My shifter play is rather large, and I tend to grind gears every once in a while.
A driver had me open the hood and looked at the tie rod while I was moving the steering wheel. He said he can't find anything wrong with it but can hear a grinding sound(or was it groaning?) -
my steering gear box just went out couple weeks ago..the way it started was a lot of play in the steering wheel and it would bumpsteer in other words certain bumps it would durn near pull the wheel out of my hands and was influenced more by ruts it eventually started pouring fluid out behind it

I had that happen on the very first trip I ever went out on. Like a #######, I went with a company that didn't have trainers and just gave you a truck to go and figure it out for yourself. I was driving down some back roads in Ok empty when I had the same thing happen that your are having. I would look for a spot to pullover, which were few and far between and I would check all over the truck. I kept thinking it was a tire or rim or bad shocks or springs. I even though I may have a bent axle. I pulled over so many times! It was so embarrassing. Especially when I eventually got the courage to ask on the radio. Yep, turns out it was the ruts in the road. I felt like such an idiot!

You would have felt even more like an idiot if a tierod dropped on the ground or something else that put you upside down. You erred on the side of caution which is never a bad thing. Kudos for being a safe driver.Big Don Thanks this.
