Talked with a recruiter. 3 months with no SVC failures, or preventables. 2 weeks with a trainer.
6 months hire in at .32 a mile.
How much driver unload do they do?
Average length of haul?
How much drop and hook?
Con-way truckload (aka CFI)

I am considering going to work for Con-Way doing teams. I have 23yrs of experience my girlfirend has maybe 9mo. She is fresh out of Truck driving school. How hard are they on newbies just starting out? How hard is the road test for her. She has drivin stick but for the last 9mo she has drivin a automatic. We have talked to a recruiter and they know we live in Fla, was told that we would go to Jacksonville for orientation. We were reading and apparently they only have orientation in Joplin. Is the recruiter telling us wrong? Confused!

How much driver unload do they do? I've only had one load that I had to assist with, and it was insulation so it wasn't bad. I just had to roll the bundles to the end of the trailer. That's the only one in a little over 2 years I've been with them.
Average length of haul? This honestly changes a lot. I have 2 weeks straight with 400-600 mile runs and then 2 weeks straight without a run under 1000 miles.
How much drop and hook? This also varies. If I had to guess I'd say around 30% drop and hook.
As for gmlightsey, they recently started recruiting all over again. When this was posted by the OP they were only doing orientation in Joplin during that time. It's no longer like that. They've reopened a lot of other locations. As long as your girlfriend is a good safe driver, she shouldn't have any problems I wouldn't think. -
Does this company pay for training??/ I am looking into driving truck.
-
Last I heard, which was about 2 months ago they do NOT. You have to pay $1800-$1900 up front if I'm remembering correctly. For verification you could always contact a recruiter.
For anyone else having questions about this company feel free to ask them on this thread. I've worked for Con-Way Truckload for a little over 2 years and I'd be more than happy to help answer any questions you may have since the OP is no longer with the company. -
As I think about it, the only unload I have ever done was also the insulation and as the other driver said it was pretty easy.. Just rolled the stuff to the end of the trailer! Im not real sure about the training as I have never been involved at any level with them. But I do hear a lot of people have come through the CWTL training program.. wish I could help more and had more info about the program.. One thing I can tell you is that if you call them they will not lie to you.. They are a streight shooting company. If you do go to work for them and find you were lied to at any point you can walk right into Herbs office and tell him of your experience. If you and he can prove you were lied to, that person will no longer be around!
I was once fired and sent home (via dropping my truck off in Columbus Ohio) because I was told I would be home on sat, well sat came I was 350mi from home and weekend dispatch tried sending me 400mi the other way!! Long story short, went home emailed Herb and was put back on My truck by Wed!!
There not perfect but when it comes to OTR Co they are among the best! -
Hey Spirit how long are you out with a trainer. I go to school next week and I am definitely considering Conway.
-
Google Bob Grover he is who I have been talking to. AFAIK they aren't taking students. 3 months OTR minimum. No preventables or service failures. Then you run team for 2 weeks with a driver finisher. Anything under 6 months? You train for 2 weeks.deuce83 Thanks this. -
So I'm fresh outta school start orientation on the 13th after that is training and I was never told how long training is are you sure it's 2 weeks

I was sitting here at a shipper in MI. Asked a TL driver how things we he said "It sucks!, and its Conway not CFI!!"
Said they had him in TX for 3 months. No APU. Now are threatening him with his job because his MPG's ar 5.2. Also said things were very slow and many drivers with a lot of time in are quiting. And if you go to Joplin there is a lot of trucks sitting there. His miles are down and he expects to sit in Atlanta a couple of days and only have 1800mi for the week. He has been there 3 years.
There is a million miler guy parked near me waiting on a load. I think I will take a nap instead of talking to him.
