Hey now I went to school to work on big trucks. A lot of the guys I was in class with would prefer to make a popsicle in the reefer trucks than actually learn anything on how to fix it. Then again they say the best way to know how to fix something is know how its working when its not broken. (Sometimes not so true!!!) The grease monkeys need something to keep their job going most of the time so not fixing everything right way or getting someone else to help them is job security. LOL sorry if there are any greasers on here I'm just playing I was one for 5 yrs then decided I didn't like that no any more.

I got called late last night by the guy fixing my truck. He was working on my ICON. He had to call me to find out how to turn it on...

I wasn't surprised when I got told this morning "we lack the tools" well, when you set the guy who works on differentials to work on the complicated ProStar and it's complicated Idle Control system, no wonder it's not going to be fixed.

This is true as well. There are different areas of the shop for different items on the truck. They all work on certain areas and don't work on others but when a manager is in a tight spot and they need something fixed right away they just put an old fool on it and see what happens.

They use to have this Volvo mechanic down in the terminal in Dallas (or Irving whatever). He was freaking great.
Every time I had an issue that nobody could figure out he would be right on it and have it fixed in a few hours.
He was better than any mechanic at a Volvo shop I ever went too.

no, they wont fix our trucks there in irving. Central freight apparently moved out of Bolingbrook, IL, so its probably a matter of time before we lose that drop yard too.

so what about all the white smoke out the exhaust and losing coolant?
what did they have too say that it required a new oil cooler, and how was it associated with the problems of overheat, coolant loss and white smoke?

sounds like repair is going nowhere and they will end up pulling the head any hoooo ?

Lionheart you are surely getting real comfy on that Grey Dog Express:biggrin_25523: by now. My wife worked for US Airways, so I'm flying up Space-A:biggrin_255:. Goodluck and I'll be up there next week.

We've been out of Irving for years. The only mechanic experience I had down there was bad.

I'm not surprised about bolingbrook. That's the second drop yard we've had up there; the first was out in Cicero. I remember missing the turn on Christmas Eve, and it took an hour to get turned around and back there in the traffic. And backing in was a nightmare, worse than the Bolingbrook yard, and that one sucks.

I'm guessing you're talking to me? If so, turns out the EGR cooler they installed in Wyoming days before we went in the shop here was bad. We have the truck no, and we're down a half inch of coolant, but as long as we don't drop much more, I'm willing to ignore that.

I half expect the head gasket's bad anyway, but if that's the case, we won't know til something happens and they throw us back in the truck.

Now we're just back with a cracked exhaust and the ICON not working.

Mine just started throwing white smoke again and now my jake barely works. I'm taking it in to Cummins tomorrow morning and Ill be on the phone with Nick in the morning about a new truck. I've lost 30+ days to shop time in this truck since February. Here is a list of what has been fixed/replaced on my engine:

    - R&R Fuel Pump after truck died in inspection bay at WVC
    - R&R EGR Cooler after overheat (what initially dumped coolant into oil)
    - R&R Turbocharger
    - Pulled Valve Cover and replaced injector seals (coolant was still getting in the oil)
    - R&R DPF Catalyst and Filter after major clogging (reason for clogging still unknown)
    - R&R Thermostat Housing (found a major coolant leak)

After all that the smoking/power loss problem still exists and no check engine light to be found, as with all other issues.

Needless to say, I'm heated. I just put an APU on this truck 3 weeks ago, now I have to fight to get that swapped too.
