Do you have to have chains on the truck if you just run from Kansas to Denver and back never go west on the hill? I have seen chain up areas around Limon on 70 but thought that was kinda wierd.

 

Big John yes you do. Its a big fine if you get caught without it. Same way in Calif.Last time I checked it was a $500 fine in Calif. for not having them.

Commercial vehicles operating on I-70 in either direction between mileposts 133 (Dotsero) and 259 (Morrison) must carry sufficient chains at all times to be in compliance with the Colorado chain law.

 

I agree, they said the same thing today on XM. Only needed on the truck between 133 and 259. So who knows, I called Colorado and they told me to call the Port of Entry and so I called Lamar and he said between 133 and 259 on I-70 only. I guess tomorrow I will call the Colorado Governor and ask him.

You're not required to have chains east of Denver on I70.

The chain-up areas? Well guess what? People die out there even now in blizzards. You may not have to carry them, but it might save your life some year.

 

Okay, let me clarify, since XM, OOIDA, and others can't get it right, and I don't give a rats ### what the web says.

You must carry chains anywhere within the borders of Colorado from Sept. 1st to May 31st. For those not remembering, Oct. 29/30th, 2009, Colorado implemented the chain law on I-76 both directions between MM 52 and 59 due to blizzard conditions. There were a half dozen trucks spun out on this hill. The sames hold true for I-70 EB/WB between MM 359 (Limon) and 340.

There are multiple chain up locations on I-70 E. of Denver to Kansas, I-76 NE of Denver to Nebraska, I-25 N. of Denver to Wyo. and S. of Denver to NM. Also on US 287 So. of Lamar and between Hugo and Limon. P.O.E at Limon, Ft. Morgan, and Ft. Collins have been known to issue $50.00 tickets for not carrying chains.

The requirement to carry chains is I70 in the mountains west of Denver, mp133 to mp259. The rest of the state is not covered like that, however, you are quite correct that chains can be called for on any road in the state when the DOT declares that "The Chain Law is in Effect." At that point to be legal, you must chain-up, and quite frequently is required for travel east of the mountains.

 

I've had this discussion with a couple of people from CDOT and CSP. Even they can't make up their minds (as if they ever could) on what is and is not correct. I've watched WB Limon issue citations to drivers for not carrying chains so I know they is applies statewide. I've also seen EB Fruita issue warnings to drivers who were only going as far east as Junction. The safest advice, if your coming to Colo. carry your chains statewide, BTW, the last two winters I've had to chain up in the city while doing local stuff becuase of the snow and had people look at me funny, but I didn't get stuck.
