As you may know I recently started driving for Schneider after graduating and getting my license.I found the lifestyle interesting and the company gave me what was promised, but just didn't like the crap truck drivers had to go through dealing with a mega company, the expenses and lack of home time sucked and the pay wasn't worth the hassle!. When I averaged everything out it was just not worth it to me anyway. I guess I was lucky as soon after I started this career I was offered a local driving job trucking Propane within a 100 mile radius of my home. The pay of $30.00 a hour with company 100% paid health insurance was a offer I just had to take. My boss is wonderful! he even has a company BBQ every Friday for the drivers, and leaves the drivers alone as long as they do their job. Lots of over time is available but not mandatory. I have GREAT respect for the OTR driver and I only wish these companies took better care of their drivers. Home time if married is important! at least for me. And it sure is nice coming home to my wife's home cooked meals and my own bed. I hope the conditions for the OTR driver improves and if so I may go at it again. ps... I don't miss the Qualcomm or log books ether!

That is awesome, I got lucky myself. I am still considered OTR but I do a trailer swap every day 200 miles away from the house, so I am home daily and off on Sundays, it is very nice.

good deal man thats the way it should be. To all that read this thread riddle me this why is it that local hourly trucking jobs always pay more than OTR or regional jobs or is it that it only seems that way just wondering.

You can have your local 9-5 job. I like to hammer down on the open road, and the sense of adventure I get out here. But best of luck to ya. :brave:

Most local driving jobs do not pay better than OTR, at least not in the parts of the country that I have worked.
I was local for a long time. Mostly in construction type jobs.
    Local flatbed, dumps, mixers etc.
Pay depends on where you live, but is based on the cost of living.
Anywhere from 9-20 an hour is fairly normal.
In southern MD where the cost of living is as high as anywhere in the country the pay is close to 20 an hour. But the average cost of a small home is 170k+++.
Contrast that to the area that I live now, cost for that same home is 45k. But the hourly pay is normally around 9-12 an hour.
Fuel haulers in the area make a little more, but still not more than 15 or so.
Lots of drivers in the area though, so they can pay what they want and someone will take the job. In areas with a smaller driver pool the pay is better.
I have worked local in MD, FL and NY.

He has gotten lucky and found one of the good ones. They are like finding a needle in a hay stack.

Good stuff..when i worked at pepsi i think the bulk drivers were at about 20-21 a hour..not a bad job at all....very easy...you only delivered to large stores "walmarts, grocery stores.etc."..all the pop was on pallets..& u had a electric power mule in the trailer...it was all drop & run....u didnt touch the pop at all....they have merchandisers who stock it in the stores.......start at 5.a.m...& you where done at 1pm...3pm if its busy...off weekends..100%insurance paid by the company..they took home on average 900 a week..if u worked overtime possible 1100-1200..if u cant live off that then theres a problem...paid weekly too..i plan on going back when i have a kid & start a family....

I'm halfway. Gone from OTR to Regional with weekend hometime. Having a hard time with some crazy dispatches I'm getting from them now. I might checkback with some local propane companies.

I asked before and they said their work was seasonal but maybe going into the fall some demand for heating will go up.
