I understand that there are occasions from time to time that company will pay for drivers stay in a hotel/motel if there is a delay or break down. Then what about OTR hotel/motel stays? Always from the driver's own pocket? I know you can sleep in your cab, but there are always times that you need a 'real' room.

If you are broke down and there is no way to sleep in your truck then most companies will usually reimburse you the cost of cheap hotel/motel. They will also give you break down pay if it's more than 24hours. It's nice to get a hotel room every once and awhile but it happens pretty rarely. Most drivers rather save that day off for when they are at home. We would stay out for about three months at a time so sometimes we would take a day and stay at a hotel. Especially if we were somewhere nice or the weather was really bad. We've definitely had a few "snow ins".

Then what about stay at terminal's motel? Do you still need to pay or since the motel belongs to your own company, it is free to you (though you may have to request or wait in line for a room).

No, the rooms at the companies terminals are free. If they don't have any rooms or they are full sometimes they will just give you another truck.

If your truck is down in the shop where you have no access to it or some such would be about the only reason I can think of. Otherwise you have your bed right behind you.... unless you're driving a day cab.

You want "personal time" in a motel you personally pay for it.

Get this straight folks, trucking is a business. It is not a vacation tour, college campus or your mom's house. You are out there to haul freight and that's it. Leave the happy happy joy joy stuff with the lotus eaters.

i never worked for a trucking company that owned its own motel. they have an "agreement" with at least ONE motel to set aside a few rooms for the drivers. if the rooms are booked up due to some event in the area, you "might' be able to get a room someplace else. but otherwise, if you got a sleeper truck, you pretty much sleep in that. breakdowns, away from the terminal they "might" reimburse you. they DO NOT HAVE TO.........

face it, your on the road, you sleep in your truck. you want a "nice place" to give yourself a treat.......?? you pay for it.........and there just ain't gonna be to many "treats" you'll want to pay for..........then too, comes the "security" of the rig.........you ain't in it, and something happens, you might get screwed for it............trucking companies have NO compassion when it comes to their trucks getting damaged when a driver is not around, just because he wanted "nice place" for one night as a treat to himself.

Oh boy.. The freedom of the open road right..haha..

If I had to spend the night at a terminal when I drove OTR I would take my butt to the nearest hotel out of pocket if for some reason I could not sleep in my truck or didn't want to while on a long trip that kept me out over a week - must have spent 30 nights in a hotel paid for by me in 18 months of OTR..

That recruiter from Covenant or TMC told us that the owner bought a Motel or Hotel and that is where the people going to orientation stay and he said it was a fancy one. It must of been true coming from a recruiter.:biggrin_25525:

maybe in THAT situation, the trucking company DID own its own motel.......and what exactly is "fancy" to the recruiter........??

a bathroom.....?? a swimming pool WITH water in it......?? maybe recently deloused for bed bugs and lice..........???

"fancy" is many different things........maybe even down to the shag carpeting........and the porno videos one can rent...........

I met a driver at a stop yesterday and he mentioned something like 'allowance' of $140 per week(?)/month from his company to cover things like occasional stay in hotel/motel, using a shower at a stop, ect. Now sure if this is common.
