Hello Everybody
I am keen on switching my career to Truck Driving. I would appreciate if Seniors and experienced people in this forum to give me some insights/guidance in this regard. Have to start from basics. I am from the West Coast.
Thanks
PS: At the age of 39, better late than never.

Don't do it! The hours and pay is horrible. Dogs have more respect from the public then truck drivers.
-
dont listen to trouble. Hey, the money is pretty good just make sure you pick a respectable company and dont eat your profits on the road. Its really not as bad as that dude who just posted.
-
You are right, it's not as bad it's much worse.
-
So what is good/bad pay. What will a driver gross per month/ year? Is a grand a week enough to run the highway?
-
First things first, tell us about yourself...
Single/married/kids/pets, hobbies, house, what you expect out of trucking...
I often see my own bed 3 times a month in 8 to 12 hour periods unless I get home and have run out of hours then its a 36 hour reset....
There is money to be made out there, but its not "Easy Money" It comes with a pretty hefty price....
I have only been doing it for a few years and really enjoy what I do, but there are days.....
if you have watched convoy and think thats what its like out here you could not be more wrong....
There are some courteous drivers out here but the norm is far from that
Research and be careful what company you are looking at... -
yeah, what ever he said
-
just be careful what companie you go to--still some decent companies on west coast
for pay---at least 40 per mile---and if you are doing ltl--make sure you get paid for picks and drops---and border crossings---usually around 20 bucks each
with the smaller companies you have more leeway as to time off it seems----i would go approx 5 weeks then a week off--10 days off at xmas--- kind of what ever i wanted---gross was about 60k---now lots of people only took weekends off and made more than i did--but i also tried to run on theweekend--but not always feasible with the company i was at -
Don't become a trucker. Ever!

Before you decide to drive truck, you need to ask yourself if you have a passion for it. Are you yearning to go and drive for days on end? Are you yearning to interect with very few people, and have few real friends? Are you yearning to be away from the family and friends you currently have? Are you yearning to be out on the open road, being your own boss for the most part?
There are a lot of things to consider before you decide to go and be a truck driver. Plus, once you get in it, it's not too easy to get out. I've been driving for 6 years now, and although I like it, I love my wife and kids, and so I'm working on my exit strategy for this coming spring/summer.
So, you need to ask yourself, what are the pros vs the cons, and see where you stand after that.
