Let's put the recption and transmission deal to rest. My MOS in the Army was 36D20 with a few others but it's towerman and then more communications.
The antenna only uses the TIP of the antenna to transmit. Horizional or vertical has nothing to do with it and you lose no signal strength from this. The ground plane works the same from tip to the plane. When the antenna is leaned forward it will get bent backwards which increases the height of the tip.
Now the whole antenna is what is doing the receving. It does not matter how it's mounted on the truck EXCEPT for a few details. If you use a single antenna and the top of the antenna doesn't go overt the top of the tractor or trailer you will not receive someone transmitting from the far side of the truck or transmit very well to that side. Co Phasing your antennas (having 2) helps in both receiving in a 360* circle.
If using 1 antenna the tip must clear the top of the trailer for better transmitting.
I run with my 4' antennas leaned forward for several reasons.
#1 to keep them out of trees as I do 2 lane and city driving where there are lower bridges and the tip of the antenna is the most important part of the antenna! If it's scratched or ground down it WILL affect the transmission.
#2 The longer the antenna and the windier the day you can start to beat the side of the sleeper and scratch it. Some companies and O/O's have a problem with that!
#3 If the tip of the antenna doesn't make it over the top of the tractor it does not have as good of a ground plane.
But all in all some drivers do it to "look good" and have POS CB's anyway! Sitting they sound great when they are 100 yards away but that goes down with distance! LOL!
Want to improve your transmissions? Get a ground plane kit.Blackshack46, Dan.S, 48Packard and 3 others Thank this. -
As an ex-Avionics Tech with the Navy, I completely agree with Rollover.
Was gonna say the same, just less detailed. Nicely done.Blackshack46, Dan.S and puncher Thank this. -
anybody here know me ?!?!?!?
Binghamton area, when I was leased to Schanno and then Bud Meyer Truck Lines back in the mid 90's I ran thru Albany pretty regular I used to go by "Stretch" on the radio.....now I just use Mike or Big Mike.. -
Thanks Rollover, I couldn't agree more, but what I don't understand is why anybody cares what someone else does, period. I remember a couple Roadway drivers that ran out of Memphis that did alot of odd stuff with their antenna's, one was the first I'd seen with the forward tilt, and another used to run one vertically above the drivers side mirror and one mounted directly under it pointed directly at the ground (strange looking), they ran from Memphis to Shreveport and you could hear the almost the whole trip from most anywhere across I-40 or I-30. Well my point is if a person want to mount their antenna to the bottom of their bumper and drag it on the ground thats their bussiness, why should I care how it gets out or recieves. I run my antenna leaned forward because I like being different, I guess thats why I've never seen another truck that looks anything like mine. I try to mind my own business and be helpful when I can and appreciate it from others.

Dan.S Thanks this. -
its a lean forward attitude thing with the antenna's, like you said, you only see it on the "hotrod" trucks.
