In my search to put together as tight a business plan as possible, it just seemed that I could not find enough information to fill in all the gaps. Hope this helps; it should be enough information so you have a good idea about what you’re going to spend and have an idea what you will be able to make. Just plug in your business model’s numbers if they don’t match.

Let’s start with a little information about what you are looking at; and then, a few factors and variables that you will need to know in order to do your budget and pay calculations. We lease with LandStar. As far as I can tell, they pay about as much as anyone in the business if you don’t have your own authority.

Attached is a LandStar settlement statement dated 9/2/2010 of this month and it will contain the following information:
    · YTD gross earnings for trailer, truck, and then combination (5 total months)
    · Our percent earning for the trailer (8 %) of total line haul (page 1)
    · Our percent earning for the truck (64 %) of total line haul (page 2)
    · Our total percent earning for the truck and trailer (72 %) of total line haul YTD (page 3)
    · Important info!! Weekly deductions from LandStar

The reason for attaching the statement is so you have facts; a few factual variables that you need to know are as follows (5 months worth of info):
    · The truck started on April 5, 2010 with 423,870 miles and finished on August 25, 2010 (5 months later) with 472, 168 miles, 48,298 total miles driven.
    · We spent $23,210.44 on fuel
    · Our weekly expenses with Landstar over 5 months totaled $7,908.73
    · Our truck payments totaled $6,000.00 ($1200.00 per month)
    · Our maintenance/expense escrow collected $3,750.00 ($750.00 per month)
    · We had $948.87 worth of miscellaneous expenses (tolls, scales, postage, etc)
    · Total expenses over 5 months ($23,210.44+$7,908.73+$6,000.00+$3,750.00 +$948.87) = $41,818.04
    · We averaged about 6.2 miles/gal, assuming ~ $3.00 / gal (No APU Unit)

So what does all this mean? We hauled a bunch of money worth of freight in 5 months for a total net income of $19,594.92. That equals about $4000.00 per month at about 9210 miles per month. Here’s the math:

Before Landstar’s cut we moved about $85,295.78 worth of freight.

    72% of $85,295.78 = $61,412.96 Truck Gross

    $61,412.96 - $41,818.04 = $19,594.92 Truck Net, Expenses itemized above.

If you have at least 2 years experience with LandStar and need a truck, see our add under forum “Trucking Jobs” search “LandStar Certified Drivers”.

Your numbers mean very little, there are 8500 LS trucks and all are different.
Why do you buy their high priced comp insurance?

Yeah that 1.27 a mile is crap. I would not move a rig for under 1.50 and that to me is still low. .41CPM paid to you??? Whats the point of owning your own truck for that? I dont see one because you can make much much more then that with a lot of companies and not having one worry about paying for a break down and everything else....

$3,750 escrow is still income unless you spent it. The weekly expences of $7908.73 I assume includes tags? If so should you not prorate the tag portion over 1 year? Numbers are only usefull if you supply all the info.

I can't speak for "all" L/S O/O's as you have but SOME of us are doing fine. I can GUESS that most leased on O/O's industry wide will not put $1.27 mile to the truck (SPEEDOMETER MILES) Speedo vs HH goods miles is a huge difference. Edit- I don't think the avg rate is that bad for actual miles ran.

What was your empty miles. Now if I am reading it correct you ran Gillette, WY to Statesville NC # .84cpm and Pottstown PA to El Paso Tx # .93cpm
