Why would one even move there truck for that? I mean I can understand being in a really bad freight area and having to take on that is under a buck a mile but why take it to another place that has crap rates to??? Why wouldn't you try and find a load to say Chicago where the avg freight rate is well over 1.00 a mile? Just not making any sense to me....

In the last month I have ran 11763 miles and grossed $18995.68 to the truck. That is all miles ran including deadhead and the money is not gross but what I kept after Landstar took their percentage.

So if you kept running for the same that you have been after roughly 14 weeks you could potentially take in as much if not more then said person did in 20 weeks? In that extra 6 weeks thats what roughly a cut to you of 25K more???? That would put you in the range of like 95-90K in 5 months instead of the 61K.

I own my own trailer and yes I pull a flat. I typically run 3-4 weeks out and 1 week home. Starting out at Landstar can be difficult until you learn the system. I came from running my own authority so I was used to dispatching myself and finding my own loads. I already knew some LS agents and had hauled loads for them. If you are a self starter and self motivated this is a good place to be. I can tell you that when freight was slow I had to stay out longer to make a good living.

thanx grizzly---am kind of looking at landstar a bit--and trying to decide between van and flat--i have done a bit of flat--but mainly van--and that is what i used to run--roughly 5 weeks--week at home

Well I guess there are a couple of questions here worth answering. Lets remember that this thread is intended to help those looking to get into the business as an owner operator or at least try to figure out what is reasonable; not beat them down because they dont measure up to your numbers. We never implied that we were setting records here. I just believe this is fair representation of what it takes to get started and not get discouraged.
Before I answer a few; I would like to congratulate the driver that represents these numbers. He set a goal and stuck to it. He made money, didnt loose money, didnt just break even, from the best I can tell from other threads in other forums, he didnt do very bad for his first 5 months at Landstar in this truck. There are not many places you can go in this economy and make a $1000.00 a week. Before I get all these responses about driving somewhere else and not having to maintain a truck or I wouldnt move my truck for that amount of $ A lot of you guys that run in those positions are not allowed the freedom of choosing your loads, restricted on when you go home, or your equipment is paid for or better yet this is not your first rodeo and there is a lot to be said for wisdom. This driver achieved these results running where he wanted, when he wanted, and went home for a week every month. He choose how to meet his goal. This young man is on his way to becoming an entrepreneur and businessman and there is a lot to be said for that kind of dedication.

Well Old Man, I believe your question is about insurance. Why dont you share with us what you pay and where you get it? If it is a good deal maybe we can give them some business. I personally choose Landstar because I have not found it much cheaper and I have found it a lot more expensive. All we do is pay Landstar ounce a week and they take care of the rest. There is value in one less headache and a payment plan.

Heavy Dude you are right; the $3750.00 in escrow is considered income. Unfortunately, we did spend most of it on replacing a hub, buying a wheel, 3 tires, a bunch windshield washing fluid, oil and fuel additives, oil changes, I . think thats enough said. I could go on with the importance of an escrow.
If you choose, yes you can prorate the tag fees over the entire year; however, I look at it as winning a $100.00 lottery ticket each week after 5 months; Because Landstar is going to take there payment each week for 5 months to pay that expense whether you prorate it or not. Thats 1 bill out of your check right off the bat. This changes if you buy you own; then I would prorate it and include it with my maintenance escrow and pay ounce a year.
Same thing with the $500.00 escrow Landstar takes out. It is a one-time fee collected at ~ $30 a week for the first 4 months. That is why I made a note of it.

Mr. Plum Crazy, glad to see interest in the statement attached. El Paso Texas was actually $1.18 per mile. We run step decks; and haul partials. Stuff you would see below $1 is usually less than 10 k lbs or a favor for an agent. Obviously we would not see $1.27 per mile avg doing this regularly; come on a little credit.

Grizzly, this is a great goal for new O/O to shoot for. I have seen it; therefore, I do believe it is attainable. Looks easy because its only $0.34 per mile above what we posted with this particular thread; but new guys and gals beware, to increase your output by $0.34 takes skill, wisdom, a heck of a plan, and some paid for equipment helps to.

I use http://www.1stguard.com/, you can get a on line quote any time, I had no problem with a claim(storm damage)and they have a payment plan, they charge my debit card monthly.
What I pay is based on my equpiment, my guess is you will save enough to make it worth changing. -
Not to be a smart ###,but $1.27 pulling a step hauling partials is dirt cheap. If hes happy thats all that matters.
