Hi there everyone. I am a newbie just starting out, got my permit, have done a week of driving training preparing for my DMV test which I will be ready by the end of next week I believe.

I live out here in Los Angeles CA, born and raised in Illinois, my ideal company to work for I think would be Dot Foods. I don't have any reason to use any other company. Rather than the pay and time back home, I'm more interested in their good reviews and the fact that the HQ is in Mt. Sterling which is right next door to my hometown in the middle of nowhere.

My dad has been a trucker for the past 6 years and has done it with a great driving record, me and him were thinking of what I should do next and we both agreed trucking would be the next best option for my career path for various reasons.

I love to drive, have only flown round trip from St. Louis to Los Angeles and back once. Never any other time. I self taught myself how to drive motorcycles, been driving cars since I was 6 years old (woot farms), trucking looks fun.

Driving a semi has been quite a wonderful learning experience, and learning from my driving instructor has been great. Even after training we would hang out and chat for 30-60 minutes if he had spare time and just chat about stuff. My instructor has been a driver for 19 years and still does it occasionally, he trains because he finds it fun and rewarding to share this with others.

I go out to Ontario, CA quite often. Learning to drive in the LA Area should be a challenge enough to give you a great headstart. It's just about being patient, that's the biggest thing I've learned. Just slow it down a bit, let the idiots drive away from you.

    Remrie Thanks this.

Thank you, but I need to PM several private members to ask them about Dot Foods as well as some friends that are on this forum as well as another forum for convenience sake. Thank you though!

    Aces... I love you <3

Thanks! I start city street driving this weekend. Starting on Sat and Sun am hours while it's lighter. Then on Monday or so I'll probably be doing freeway driving and likewise city driving. Rush hour between 9am-9pm really no getting around it.

Thank you for the tip. I find the patience is going to be critical at this point, especially when I'm learning I don't want to hold people up, but it's a part of the process. If they have a short temper it's because they don't understand my situation as a new driver in a vehicle they likely will never drive.

I'm solid on straight line backing, near solid on alley docking, have yet to do parallel parking, although I am solid on low and high gears, down shifting, and almost solid on down shifting two at a time. Doing pretrip stuff on my own Wed and Thur. By next weekend I should be more than ready for my DMV test.

My instructor has been awesome, he has given me a lot of free driving time before and after my hour session, especially if nobody is immediately right before or after me since I tend to show up 15-30 mins early for training. 1 on 1 training, at my convenience, beats the hell out of hopping on a bus and being gone for a month or something for some company paid DMV CDL training.

Did you graduate yet? Just randomly stumbled upon your thread and progress. Got facebook? ..../hattaway83

I just grad from my school 9-11-10. Attended orientation with Werner the last 2 days. Going OTR with a trainer. Just waiting for a pick up! Interested in meeting anyone and everyone along the way! It's a lonely, lonely road.

Good luck! If you haven't completed your course all ready!:biggrin_25525:

I graduated driving, having orientation with Schneider this Saturday. Lasts for 1 week, ends the 24th. Then I do OTR training with my instructor for a second week. Then I'm given my truck and a team member.

I'm driving teams, gonna do .30 cents per mile at about 5,000 miles average per week. out 3 weeks at a time and home 4 days.
