I didn't notice they were backwards trucks until after I posted them. By the time I found a replacement pic, the others had been quoted.

I fugured I would get busted on that one.:biggrin_255:

Sounds great until it snows. The air inlet just needs a fresh air supply.

When the a/c goes out I have a 4" pvc 90* elbow that I strap to the front of the door to scoop air into the truck. I sounds silly and looks horrible but it will blow your hat off your head at 30mph +. Beats sweating.

That is what I was thinking, it's almost like a compound turbo!!

You would need to turn or shield them in rain and snow.....

Dam John.. I like reading yer posts as you usually roll out the correct information, but I could enjoy yer posts alot more if you didn't protest whatever looks good then turn around and promote every option that makes a truck look dorky..
I always called those breather scoops like the old cabovers had a snorkel, thinking that the motor must suck pretty bad if it had one.. :biggrin_25524:

A knowledgeable fellow like you should be able to appreciate the fact that, by design, some trucks are simply a thing of beauty.. I just can't understand why anyone would prefer not be lookin' kool while driving down the road..
I can't help but wonder now if you support that same style of bad taste in other beautiful things, like women.. So do you prefer yer ladies all dolled up with alot of curves, or the flat olive-oil lookin types to get the job done.. :biggrin_25523:

The trucks I have seen them on, they looked OK.
I must admit that I am not impressed with a lot of the fancy trucks I see on the road. I have known owners that would spend hours cleaning their truck, and polishing chrome. They never spent the time doing the maintenance.
A truck with the exhaust mounted beside my ears, and hanging out in the slip steam, air cleaners hanging off the hood, a thousand light's, not impressed.
Personally I am impressed with a truck that makes money, is clean, and well maintained.
Those ugly scoops do work to keep the snow out, bugs, and a lot of dirt.
The wife is great, been happily married since 1972, Retired at 58. Life is good. I do over-maintain my vehicles, and always kiss the wife when I go out.
Got to go, where is that woman!

    And as for the original question...I remember reading a "Flying" magazine column by their resident engineer type at the time (Peter Garrison) was his name. He was writing about this exact issue, and here is what he said;

(to paraphrase)...a cylindrical scoop pointed directly into the airflow, with no outlet at the back, will pressure up to 1psi inside at about 300mph.

So, to answer the question, air scoops can look cool, and keep the intake air cool and clean, but they will do nothing to add air (and thus power) to the engine. The only way to do that is with forced induction (i.e. a turbocharger or supercharger).

However, having things hanging out in the slipstream can rob noticeable power, so JohnP3 is about right. A clean, well maintained truck with minimal lights, scoops, stacks etc hanging out in the wind will "make" more power than the most duded up rig.

    Cheers,
    Phil

Ram air? What are you talking about? Turbos are usually designed to put air as soon as possible in cylinders at low rpm and at higher enine speed they may put twice more air then engine needs that's why boost pressure software and hardware (simple overboost valves) limited. For 12L 440 HP 2.3 Bar is limit. Overboosted engine produce more NOx, and burns more fuel with the same output. Yep - diesel requares no stehiometry like gas engine, anyway work better with ideal fuel:air ratio.
