I hate to be the one to tell you but guess what? They do exactly this! have you filled out an insurance application that asks such questions as Race? Smoker? How long? How many packs a day? Cancer? Diabetes? Back pain? surgeries? Heart attacks? Your weight, height, family history? your medical history and yes a release form to release your medical records. They have been asking these questions for years. My dad was an insurance broker for as long as I remember and sitting and helping him with policies all these questions were normal and he would point out to me as I was a smoker that when ever I applied for insurance I would pay a 10% or higher cost towards my premium! Before he died in the mid 90's weight started to be another premium jacker. So yes these have been asked and used against you even the race question! Blacks ARE more succectable to high BP over whites so that's a money maker also. I know it's discrimination but prove it. There might not be a box now BUT you know the guy writing the policy has some kind of code!

Insurance is one of the biggest businesses in the world. It also controls how hiring practices are implemented in industry and yes trucking. They do not want risks on the rolls! If you smoke, weigh too much, have heart problems or any other medical problem they DO NOT WANT YOU on their policies! They really do not want to pay your doctor bills!

They want healthy people but they need the money so they'll sell you but you'll pay for it. They do not make money writing checks to hospitals or doctors! They make money with healthy people who stay away from doctors and don't smoke or other life threatening things.

Just yesterday a news report about social websites and business and insurance companies! They are now hitting FaceBook and others looking for you! They look through your pictures and see you drinking at parties, climbing mountains, smoking that joint or cigarette (which you told them you didn't!) or racing motorcycles or even RIDING them or some other hobby that could cost THEM a hospital bill later and they then go and set you a higher premium! Not to mention that hopefully new boss who sees you doing that "here hold my beer and watch this" act! He'll then file 13 that application!

They CAN do anything they want. We are stuck with it! As I said before, keep eating your arse into a health situation. Yes, it's your right to eat all the heck you want, BUT it's their right to refuse you or to terminate you at their leisure! It doesn't matter how many millions of miles you've driven safely or the years. It's what can or could happen tomorrow that matters to them! If it "could" cost them a million dollars in a settlement from either your heart attack as you are driving down the road or from you falling over on a loading dock breaking down a pallet or just walking across the lot and your ankle giving out from that excess weight on it do you really think they give a hoot in a holler about you? NO! They think about the bottom line and you can be or are a threat to that bottom line in premiums and outlay in a law suit.

Smokers? You ARE next. It's coming and you need to think about that nasty arsed addiction of yours! It would be to your advantage to quit when you HAVE a choice or face a no smoking rule in their truck! I smoked for 39 years! I quit and yes it was hard but wow did I feel better and saved a lot of money, AND smell so much better too! So did my truck! BUT it's on the way! besides we don't really LIKE to smoke! Thats a lie we use to justify smoking! Yes, it is! Quit with the BS! If there was an AAA for smokers I would be a freaking member! We're all pu****s and don't have the gonads or guts to quit!

YES, admit it! You're all sissies who CAN'T quit because you're addicted to a tiny piece of paper wrapped around some stupid weed! I was too! Want to quit? The way I did it? Then go to my blog. You'll find the link below in my signature line and go to chapter 12. I wrote it down in that never ending story of my cancer trip! It actually got easy towards the end! Just stay away from doctors as that's when you find out you have cancer! After you freaking quit that sorry habit! ROFLMAO!

And yes it was funny in a dumb kind of way! Besides quitting while going through 3 kinds of surgeries, radiation, chemo and other problems like my throat being cooked and destroyed by radiation would have been sheer hell! Trust me on this even though we all know that when someone says trust me it's leading into a bad thing but this you CAN trust me on! ROFLMAO again!

    Ok I'm done! Again?

I posted this on the other fat thread, one of numerous ones started by the OP.

I hope it will be a powerful wakeup for those of you in self denial about what being overweight, obese, whatever; you want to call it, can and will do to you. If not today, tomorrow, if not then, then next year, or maybe 5 -10 years.

Now for the first 30 years of my life, I was blessed with being an athlete. When I got out of the USMC at age 24 I weighed 240lbs of solid muscle. Had a 28 inch waist, and a 48 in chest. I'm 6' 7" by the way. According to the BMI index I was overweight.

Fast forward 10 years. I have gained 40 lbs; got to love what hard drinking will do to your body. But I was still living an active lifestyle, Mountain biking (in real mountains), playing basketball in a rec league, etc. Blow out my knee, lose the active lifestyle and in ten years gain another 40 lbs. Start driving truck and in two years gain another 30 lbs.

I got off of the truck in Feb 2007, and had a mild Heart Attack that summer. My cardiologist couldn't find a reason for my heart to be so weak. She sent me to a sleep doctor and he diagnosed me with Sleep Apnea. I had a really bad case of it, I would stop breathing over 200 times an hour. Your nervous system floods your blood supply with epinephrine, which races your heart and promotes breathing and wakes you up just enough to gasp for air, when you have an Apnea.

That is why you are so tired when you have Sleep Apnea, you never get into the deep REM restorative sleep phase. It is also terrible for your heart to always be racing, when it should be resting during sleep. This constant stress on the heart enlarged it to where it was only pumping at 25% output. Normal is 55 - 60%.

Now, I have lost 50 lbs since August of 2007, simply by using my CPAP machine every night. I have a goal of losing forty more through diet and exercise. My BMI is at 35. But my Heart has healed itself to where it is pumping normal again.

The CPAP (Continuos Positive Air Pressure) machine saved my life! I would highly suggest that anybody who is overweight and snores at night get tested! If you are always feeling tired, there may be a reason for it! So those of you who say Prime is discriminating against you for wanting you to do a sleep study, they are not. They may in fact be saving your life.

I see no discramanation here. Yes, Prime is being a harda## about this, but it is their right. I have gotten smarter, eating healthier and excersising. Not everone can lose weight thru diet and excersise, so if this is you talk to dr about a lap band or gastric bypass. It does cost money, it will cost you time at work. It is worth it in the long run.

I will post my progress with the weight loss. If you don't have the will power to do it on your own, have a friend help.

It also helps if you have "motivation", buy a shirt (or nascar jacket in my case) that is to small for you right now. Look at it and say I am gonna wear this in 2 to 3 months. I can wear my nascar jacket now, just can't button it yet. This works for me...

I never thought I was home free. I know I will have my share of maladies as I age. I was just using myself as a template for the discussion. I have no idea where this fat thing is going, Obummercare may not make it if the Reps get control back in Nov. That is what has led to the insurance problems today, and the will continue until this crap gets sorted out.

Personally I think all insurance is a rip-off. It is just another business tool to screw us with.

Wow!!! I can't believe I read 22 pages of this thread.

I guess I don't really care if I offend anyone or not but if you are 5'6'' and 250 pounds, especially as a woman, you are fat. I'm sorry. That is a fact and the truth. Deal with it. Either loose weight, look another place for employment but quit making excuses.

I agree, the BMI chart is not 'reliable'. I'm 5'11"/6' and weigh anywhere from 175 to 180/185. All depends. And it has me close to being 'overweight'. I'm not in range of the obese part or anything. But there is no way anyone would look at me and consider me overweight. I'm in great shape. Blood pressure, cholesterol etc.... is perfect. According to the chart though....lol

Gotta face it though....the BMI system is probably here to stay. You have to deal with it. Honestly, truckers that are so fat they have a hard time getting in and out of their truck, shouldn't be driving anyhow. IMO, they are dangerous.

If you are a high risk to having heart attack, to randomly falling asleep or any other medical condition where you could cause a wreck....you shouldn't be driving. Period.

It's not the company's fault. If you are with them then I can see them having an obligation to help you get treatment. If that is part of their policy. But if they have a minimum requirement for you to maintain and you cannot do so, that is not their fault, IMO.

    Take responsibility for yourself, people.

I generally try to use diplomacy when refuting someone, but in this case "you're wrong" is the best I can do. There is a very clear and established link between sleep apnea and high BMI. NOT everybody who's overweight will develop apnea, but there is a high risk. It'd take awhile to explain, but the general question is HOW your body naturally distributes fat.

As for descrimination? :biggrin_25513: Sorry. If true your policeman friend being disqualified would automatically clear them from fat descrimination. BMI isn't as simple as 'height/weight proportionate'. It's a measure of what percentage of mass is accounted for by fat.

For what it's worth, I'm sorry you're having this trouble with the company. I suppose someone could theorize that this place IS using a plausible excuse to avoid EEO charges.. but if so, WHY would you want to work for a company like that?

Congratulations on the weight you've been able to lose. I assume by your BMI your around 310 or so. Your is not an uncommon story of the athelete who has lost their " edge" and packed on the weight in some cases do to circumstances beyond their control. Weight lifters, football players, and those in the military seem to be the most susceptable.

A doctor once told me that most people carry around too much weight because their led to believe there is "good" weight, muscle, and "bad" weight, "fat". According to him the heart doesn't know if the extra weight is fat, muscle, or mardi grais beads. :biggrin_2559:
Most doctors will tell you lowering your BMI will decrease your risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and developing sleep apnea.

    BOL in your continued efforts.

JUST BECAUSE YOU WRITE IT REALLY BIG DOESN'T ADD ANY TRUTH TO THE OBVIOUSLY FALSE STATEMENT...
Because as we all know, Prime is one of the crookedest bottom feeders out there.
