Actually I found parallel parking to be fairly easy. I thought it was going to be really hard but it wasnt. Then again I wasnt parking between cars that I had to worry about hitting. I had room to work but it really is easier then i ever thought it would be.
-
cool...i should nail it easy then...thats the only part I am worried about when i go to utah....lol....

When I went to school in Louisiana they would not take us on the route we would test on, and would not tell us anything about it.
We had some turns we would do in town here and there that they would emphasize that we need to really pay attention on them, and some turns in the test were like them.
One bad one required a button hook turn and backing up traffic.
No option, it was the only way to do the turn. If you did not stop and wait for the cars to move you would hit a pole on the right side, that was on the edge of the curb.
No points were taken off for the button hook or the backing of traffic, it is a situation that you will get into on the road, and they wanted to make sure we were ready to take the space required to make whatever turn we had to make.
I mentioned this to one of the drivers at your school when they were in Medina, they said that they had to teach what NY required, but that you will have situations on the road that they cannot and will not cover.
I have no idea why NY will fail drivers for making traffic back up though. It is not an illegal maneuver. I guess it is just that they know on that turn it is not needed, so they will not allow it. -
I asked why it was an autofail and I was told that its considered bullying traffic... He said in the real world its going to happen but NY doesnt like it. I can say that the turn we took there was much like what you described. It is possible to make it but it has to be perfect or your either rolling curb or backing up or making traffic back up. It has to be dead on. The other 2 passes I made around that corner I got lucky because there was no traffic at the light at those points and I just utilized their lane.
Oh and btw... we have not gone on the road test route either. I actually asked him if that was the route today. The reason I asked is because we go that route everyday now. He told me that it is not the test route but the turns in that route are the type of turns we can expect to see during the road test.
On another note.... Its amazing how comfortable I am driving a tractor trailor already. I was nervous as hell the first few days and now Im just as comfortable driving it as I am driving my car. Actually I kind of hate getting back in my car afterwards because its so low to the ground I cant see anything lol. I really did not think I would be this comfortable driving already. -
Just always know where your front bumper and the trailer are, and you will be fine.
Learning your space is one of the things you need to pick up on as fast as possible.
I am glad they are no longer running the test route, they did at the other school, and I know of at least one guy that failed his road test on a curb while making a left lol.
How the heck do you do that? Talk about diving into a turn. -
Hey Scott, do you know how much time you will be with a trainer and do they have regional accounts that would get you home every weekend or is it all OTR? Thanks
-
5 weeks with a trainer. It might be shorter if you have cdl and experience already. Im starting as a complete newb. As far as regional. Im sure they have some but you probably have to get your work in and prove yourself first.
Not quite sure how someone could hit a curb on a left turn lol but I have seen a couple times someone taking the left turn like they were driving a car. Still... curbin it on a left is pretty funny lolLast edited: Sep 20, 2010

hey i already have 4 months of over the road experience teaming with a owner operator, but im starting central this monday to get my license,(been driving with a c.dl.permit) do you think they will make me stay with my trainer for the whole 4or5 weeks...im sure once i go out with my trainer, after the 1st day he's prolly gonna ask me why is training some 1 who knows how to drive already..lol...so yea do you think theres a chance my trainer might call central & say hey this guy doesnt need me to train him because he already knows what he's doing??

It is possible they will cut it short, but I doubt it. Probably be with a trainer for 4 weeks.
I went to them for a refresher, already had my license and I had to stay with a trainer 3 weeks. Even though he told them he could not teach me anything after 2. Which was the first time we hit SLC.
They need to show the driving time to their insurance, they are partly self insured, but not completely. And it is safer for them to have proof of training, in the event of unforeseen situations.
If you have a half way decent trainer you will probibly learn allot anyway.
