@Merlin: I have read halfway thru "help a wanna-be out" and I must say this is a VERY GOOD thread! Thank you for referring it to me! Great information out there! I will have to admit I laughed at the original poster's thought of making $40k-$50k right after training. I am not even looking to enter the industry and I know better than that.

You would be very suprised at how many newbies do not make it. It is one thing to get your cdl it is a completly different thing to go OTR. I would venture to say 90% of the newbies quit during training. Trucking is NOT for everyone and to be honest very few can hang in their, for numerous reasons. That is why the schools can turn out people constantly, and still have a driver shortage. Trust me their is a shortage of quality drivers and it is going to get worse with csa2010. Just my 2 cents. There is a regional carrier that hauls for Northern Tool in Fort Mill... find that warehouse and ask the drivers as the enter/exit the lot. There's also a big US Food Service distribution center in Fort Mill... try them.
A small company usually will treat you better than the big companies... find them.chompi Thanks this. -
Yea OTR is not for everyone. I think a lot of people go in expecting a big paycheck, but they dont realize the drastic life change they are about to embark on. I do not know from personal experience *yet* but I can only imagine. If we weren't used to the Military Lifestyle already, I probably wouldn't be able to handle it with the kids. However, I have that experience and I know that I can make it on my own. We won't focus on the days that he is gone....we will focus on the days until he comes home & enjoy those to the fullest extent!

US Food Service requires 1-2 years experience....we already hit that route. Definitely going to check out the Northern Tool. We are actually 5 minutes away from both of those places. I find myself jotting down a lot of truck companies as we ride down the interstate! I'm a woman on a mission I guess you can say!

The more specialized the carrier, the more you make in this business. If he can get on with Western Express's flatbed division versus the van side, he will be better off in my opinion. This experience and then moving up to a drop deck or a RGN trailer (will probably have to change to another company) will make him more valuable to employers. Another way to improve himself is to try and get on pulling a tanker. I am leased to a dry box van company, but we specialize in a certain type of work which increases the freight rates. Just food for thought. I hope it all goes well.

Is it really? Someone had mentioned they received quite a bit of loads due to being one of the few flatbed terminals. What have you heard about it being crappy, if you don't mind me asking? I think until he gets his 1st year he is just going to have to bite his tongue and make the most of anything. Once he gets experience...then he can try to move on to something else.
I'm just curious as to why companies like Stevens & US Xpress take almost 15+ years to reach $0.40cpm while SWIFT it only takes 3-4 years. Not sure if that means SWIFT is really that bad so they offer better pay to get you in, or if it is something positive.
This whole industry has a lot of unknown. I tend to worry a lot about things I cant forsee and/or control....so if I were to work in this field....I would probably kill myself with worry! LOL!
