I've read many posts on here, so I know some of the horror stories about companies like England, Stevens, etc. My question is - which companies that provide training to get the CDL and a job afterwards are considered "good". I know none of them are perfect, but some are apparently better than others. Some research I've done suggests Maverick or Millis as "good" places to start, and what about Roehl or Crete? Also, anyone know anything on Cardinal? It seems England, CRST, Stevens, Werner, Prime, etc don't seem to be quite up to par.
I drove a Pepsi truck back in the mid 90's, so I have 2-3 yrs driving a tractor trailer combo; its just really old experience. i will be deploying with the Nat'l Guard soon, and I'm just trying to come up with a backup plan, should my current career come to an abrupt halt when I get back. Any info you all can provide would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Well, if I knew the information I was seeking, I would answer my questions....c'mon folks, anybody out there able to chime in? I'm headed to Afghanistan soon, and who knows what will happen with my current job when I get back. The fact I drove a tractor trailer back in the 90's makes me want to consider getting into the industry cause I know I can get the CDL. Question is where to go, what companies? I've read tons on here about England, Stevens, etc. Don't want to go that route if it isn't necessary. Read some good stuff about Maverick, about Millis, etc. Need ya'lls expertise about what company will train/hire a driver that doesn't have a really, really bad reputation. Thanks in advance for any info you can share.

Sorry amigo. I went the Swift route after getting a CDL via private school. Wish I could help.

Sorry, but I think the reason nobody has answered is you have seemed to have closed your mind and answered your own question. Why don't you take the time to read about all the major training companies yourself or do your own research by talking to the companies or visiting their websites?
There is good and bad on here about most every large company in the OTR business. There are thousands of posts that have already answered or addressed your question.
Anybody who comes on here and asks the question you did, wanting your hand held, waiting for some stranger to tell you the "best" company to go work for is setting themselves up for failure. Part of being a professional driver is to do your own homework on this career choice and make your own decisions.
Sorry if this wasn't what you expected or wanted to hear. -
I'm not driving yet but have done a lot of research. If you scroll down to forum jump, the companies are posted and you'll receive more info. Since I live in Fl., I don't have many choices. I do have my eye on Schneider.

Why dont you see Prime being up to par? Out of the ones who train and get you a job after Prime would be the best bet. As long as you get a great instructor and then a great trainer like I did you will be satisfied and you will learn a ton. I would say for the high level of training, the equipment, and the pay Prime would be the way to go. Stay on the company side for a year or more before you lease if you were planning on it just to learn the way everything goes.

Are you in the Marine corp? Check out troops to truckers when you get back from the stan. I took it as a refresher since I had my CDL before the Corp. They can get you hooked up with a few companies to. If your in something besides the Marines there has to be a way to get your CDL throuigh the military using your tuitions assitance. Check into it so that way you dont really have to sign a 1 year agreement or you owe them money or anything. PM me if need be and I can let you know some more.

Thanks for the replies. # Civil Werks - not looking for anyone to hold my hand, nor am I closed minded. Fact is, I HAVE done research, including reading NUMEROUS posts on here. That's how I came up with a few names that "seem to be good" and some that "seem to not be up to par". That's why I said "c'mon folks, chime in". I could read a thousand posts each on any of the companies I mentioned, and there will be good and bad, so who do I believe or trust? Some of the so called "bottom feeder" companies have people who swear by them so how exactly does someone like me know?.....# milskired- I have no personal knowledge of Prime, I'm just reading stuff here, and with all of the companies, I see good and bad. Just seemed to me that I saw more bad than good about the ones I listed. As for the military, I'm Army Nat'l Guard, and I probably could use college money for the CDL, but there's a new benefit that allows me to transfer my college money to spouse or child, so that's what I'm doing on that.

Okay I'll admit after going back and re-reading your post that I may have been a little harsh.
But, here again you posted that you have read numerous posts and realize there are many "Characters" on here. So why would you want to listen to any of us about this important decision?
If you are going to be gone more than a few months, I would wait until you got back before investing the time and energy to find a job in this industry.
