I have only driven for an O/O in my trucking career. After a hiateus from the road, I plan on going company driver soon. Right now my options are Werner, Swift or Western Express. Therefore I have some questions about being a company driver. Is it up to you to route yourself from the shipper to the receiver?? Do they assign fuel stops??? How do e-logs differ than paperless?? Do most trucks feature an opti-idle??? Whats the typical quallcomm message like with the information for picking up a load???

E-log and paperless are different names for the same thing. Not a big deal to learn how. If an "old school" fart like me can do it you young "whippersnappers" have no excuse.
The rest is pretty much what O/O's do only without the monthly payments.

co. drivers are assigned routes at Swift. they also assign fuel stops the QC messages are the same for both owners and company drivers. you have a little less leeway as far as accepting loads or not. owners can just say no co. drivers usually have to justify turning down a load.
The Challenger Thanks this. -
when i drove a company truck back in '77, i got assigned routes, fuel stops & had to be on time to load/unload.

I get routes over peoplenet but can go on another interstate if its not far out of route. Peoplenet is an electronic log which I like. All you do is push a few buttons and it keeps track of your hours, breaks and customer deliveries. Is assigns you a load, sends you an adress and directions but you still need an atlas and gps.We also get 20 miles to bobtail on personal time during breaks. Fuel is done anywhere that takes our t check card. So I stop at J's the most. Hope that helps explain the e logs. Get going driver kuz ya can't make no $$ in these forums come on
and anything over 50 gals gets you a shower.

on OOIDA web site they have a link to interviwing the interviewer. it will give oyu the questions you should ask when talking to to a recruiter.

Werner gives you a suggested route with directions, but you can go wherever the hell you please as long as you get the load there on time.

My company figures you know how to read a map so you should be able to get from point A to point B without any suggestions. We run E-Logs so that takes all the guessing out of logging. We also have the Peoplenet system and most of our contact with dispatch is preplanned for the whole week. Since we got our new trucks in 95% of our fleet is APU equipped. Our fuel stops are assigned, (T/A's) and have certain ones that we can fill up at with our Comdata card. We also have another fuel card we can use at any other fuel stops in case of an emergency. If we go over our 175 gallon allotment per day we have a very easy system in place to get authorization for the extra fuel purchase, we carry a P.O # with us to bypass the phone game.
