The FBI is just trying to narrow the list. Who else is on the road as much as truck drivers? Well, cops are on the road a lot and I see more cops getting busted for crimes than truck drivers.

Point fingers at a trucker. They carry backpacks around all the time. Some with heads in it. Personally I think some jackazz reporter done it and is writing a story about it to cover his tracks.

It's amazing how stupid some people are. Have you thought about a transient?? Doh!

And where in the article did it say all truckers are serial killers? It didn't... and if Redd had completed the REST of the paragraph (posted as the second quote above) -- which I'm not sure why he didn't include it -- you'd see the article's author saying as much.

Let's just take something out of context and start hollering "poor, maligned truckers". I'm not buying it. As I said earlier, there are scum in every profession. Truckers aren't exempt.

    No, Ducks, they aren't.
But articles like this skew the publics' perception of truck drivers even further than they already are.

Not only truck drivers travel this country extensively. There are the "snow birds", who spend the hot months in cooler climes, then return home to the warmer states for the winter.
There are traveling musicians, carnival workers, just to mention a few. Many of whom use truck stops and rest areas, just like the truckers.

These were not mentioned in the article as people who are of great interest in these traveling serial killers.

You didnt quote all of the article.
Many people will not click the article and read it.

While it is not a pretty picture of Trucking it is something that occurs and knowledge might help to save even one life that the article is valid. I have been aware of nefarious deeds done by truckers in the past long before this article. I keep my eyes peeled at Truckstops and rest areas and also take notice of stranded motorists and call in assistance even if it appears another motorist or Truck Driver is already helping them. I have seen just plain creepy looking people and take note of surroundings. Article or not their are wackos on Trucks out on the road as well as in cars. When a car pulls into the truck area I usually perk up a bit. I don't feel threatened in the least as most criminals prey on the weak and not a 6 foot 5 300 pound man. But when I see a woman walk across the lot by themselves I cant help but worry about them and try to make sure they make it to the door or see which truck they get into. I am sure all these actions seem creepy but I am aware of my surroundings and if ever I could lend info or even aid to help an investigation or stop a crime I am ready.

If so, maybe they'll get out of the way and not cut a big rig off now for fear of being next! hehe

So the last sentence said their are many good truck drivers. So Miss Ducks... How many would you consider many? 2? 6? 100?

There are 100's of thousand truck drivers if not millons in this Country. Why couldn't they just say 98% of driver's don't partake in these illegal activities? Or 2% of the currently lisenced commercial drivers are up to no good?

Being a comerical driver, I visit many of truck stops & rest areas. Many of them I spend the night in. and not once out of 10 years of driving have I witnessed or participated in a illegal activity. So obviously what they are saying in the story is screwed.... I would think I would have witnessed something if it happens just like they tell it. And yeah, I am a shady looking truck driver. I have a shaved head, I have a goate, I have tattoo's, I have a foul mouth, I drive a truck because I hate the majority of people. But I am also one of the first people who will give you the shirt off my back if you need help. Just last year Judi Kay had a financial issue.... I have never met the woman, but I offered her money to help. She never accepted, but I offered.

So being shady, does that mean I'm a criminal?

Cause it was a rather long article to put into a quote. That is why there was a link to the article so people could readd it themselves. If they didn't read the article, then they have nothing to blame but their own ignorance.

To be honest, Redd, this was the post which set me off... but I used your post in the quote because you had highlighted the negative and cut it one sentence short of a positive to generate these type remarks. The poster says "we are all possible serial killers". That's not what the article said nor do I think that's the public's perception. And just prior to that, he notes the driver who called in the DC sniper and claims "We don't get no credit, just the back of the hand." That's not true, either. The fact that a trucker located and reported the DC sniper was often stated by the media. It wasn't swept under the rug and disregarded.

You ask me how many good truck drivers are out there? I would say most of them are good, decent people. Unfortunately, though, stereotypes are often based on extremes... and there are enough truckers who don't fall in the "norms" of society to create and perpetuate this stereotype of the "big, bad trucker". Even their fellow drivers complain about the number of truckers who don't bathe regularly, piss in public areas, leave trash laying around, and talk trash on the CB.

I'm not saying that non-drivers are all clean, upstanding people. But truck drivers -- by the nature of their vehicles -- are much more visible. They are the professionals... and I think most people would like to hold them to that standard. But as in all professions, some fall short... and those that fall short always seem to get the attention. It's not just drivers. Ask any cop... school teacher... politician... lawyer.

Personally, I think that when any of us who work hard and do our jobs honestly are hurt when we read of someone who has misused the given privileges and responsibilities to commit a crime. As a trucker, the fact that they were pointing fingers (right or wrong) at a fellow trucker stood out to you. As a member of the non-trucking public, I didn't give it that much importance.

Don't be laying your disgust of a fellow truck driver on the general public's supposed perception of truck drivers. Place it where it belongs -- on whoever did the crime.
