I agree about the Pilot on the I-285 Bypass around Atlanta! I've stopped by there a couple of times for fuel and both times I was approached by people trying to bum money off of me. The first time it was a guy that claimed he had turned to God and was trying to sell a CD that he'd just released so that all the profits could go to needy children... I ask how much he wanted for the CD as he claimed it was just by donation and he says "$25".
I've seen several people post up that they liked Bill's Truck Stop off of I-85 below Lexington. I've been there two times in the 5 years that I've been driving and wasn't impressed with either stop. The first time (before the ban on smoking indoors), the guy behind the register stood there with a cigarette in his mouth, puffing away. He was thumbing through some magazine and failed to see me standing there with my fuel card in hand waiting to start the pumps up. I'm a 6'6" guy and usually pretty hard to miss. After he finished reading whatever paragraph in the magazine, he finally acknowledged that I was there while puffing his smoke in my direction. Maybe it's because I'm not in an 18 wheeler that I didn't feel like he was being very friendly to me. I avoid Bill's and head to the Pilot further south in Kannapolis.
The dumpy truck stop off of I-95 in Baltimore, just a couple miles north of the tunnels seems shady but like the above mentioned Bill's, sort of gives me a feeling of what I'd imagine a 70's truck stop would have been like. The truck stop off of Crain Hwy (301) just north of the toll booth crossing over from MD in to VA is the same way.
Has anyone else been to the Jane Lew Truck Stop in Jane Lew, WV? That's an interesting place as well. It appeared to have a huge parking lot but when I was there, only a couple of trucks were there though so that may have been a sign. They had a selection of some the most lewd porno magazines I think I'd ever seen at a truck stop. The girl working the counter was pretty cute though, tat'd up and listening to some good music.
It's a shame that White's Truck Stop in Raphine, VA was bought out. I remember stopping there when I was a kid during family vacation's to PA and NY. I stopped there a few times as well as a driver. I'll be heading that way tonight actually... haven't decided if I want to swing by there to check things out or continue on up to the Pilot south of Staunton. I just don't like the long ### walk from the pump's to the building at Pilot. -
As for bad truck stops....when Sugar Tree at the 126 in TN on I-40 was open that place was a #### hole....I was actually grabbed by a guy there one night and if I hadn't screamed as loud as I did and woke up a buddy of mine I ran in there with I don't wanna know what would have happened....but he grabbed me next to my buddy's truck and I screamed and kicked the sleeper and woke him up....(mind you I'm 5'4 and the guy that grabbed me was every bit of 6'5 or taller and way broader than me) and the twin pilots in memphis are terrible for any female that isn't a lot lizzard cuz god forbid we walk alone thru that lot.....even dressed in jeans, "#### kickers" (boots) and a teeshirt with a mossyoak huntin jacket on you still get hit on...I turned around at one driver and cussed him up one side and down the other for even tryin it....I'm no longer allowed to walk alone but ###### I was alone in the truck that run...DocWatson Thanks this. -

i have an apu but when i need to run it i try to park next to someone who is already idling or park away in the corner by myself. i never park next to someone with their window down unless im going to have my windows down too. i love this time of year. pop your vents, roll down the windows and let the crisp fall air flow through the truck. -
a small potatoe would work on an apu exhaust
cpttuttle Thanks this.
