Hey...even though I've not started driving yet, don't badmouth my old 'hood so much. I used to ride with my father running fruit from Hunt's Point out to PA, OH.

The heating oil company he worked for in the winter was a bit down the road from Da Point.

And if you think it's bad NOW, you should have seen it 20+ yrs ago. :biggrin_2555:

That's when I was there, and why I'd quit a couple trucking outfits. More than one load a month to the NE corridor and...I was gone.

There is not an Idle Aire there anymore! No one used the thing!
Me I LOVE NYC! I even have a MTA pass in my pocket and when I get back off of medical leave I'll change it to a seniors pass! LOL.I go in a day early, go visit the many friends I've made over the years, go eat a great meal in a NICE restaurant at a better price than a Petro, walk around the different areas, catch a show and just have a blast! I also have a lot of places to park all over the 5 Borrows so I never have that problem! I do favor the Williamsburg area as it's undergoing a major face change and the people are "younger" and getting more upscale. Heck I just might move there! LOL

I started doing HP back in the late 70's and it really was a pit hole back until the early to mid 90's when they finally put the fence up! Yeah the freaks would walk up onto the docks and help themselves but usually they would get their arses kicked by the dock workers because they didn't pay a kick back ! I watched quite a few losers get their rears put over their shoulders! hen there is the "story" about this trucker who caught 2 dudes in his trailer and closed the doors on them and set the temp to -20. He waited for a couple of hours and then called the cops! From the story, the losers didn't put up much of a fight being dressed in t shirts in a freezer! They were kinda glad the cops were there to take them to a warm jail cell!

The streets outside the Hunts Point meat market AND produce section was always crawling with lizzards and losers sellin everything from fake gold to the tires from the truck parked in front of you! I found out the best "lock" to use on the trailer wasn't a master but a 1 1/2" -9/16" bolt with 2 nuts tightened all the way up to the latch and then jammed together! You didn't have to bend the tail of the bolt over because none of the losers carried wrenches around with the bolt cutters! Never lost a box after that! Now they did used to use a chain on your doors and tear the whole door off! Locking fuel caps were nice also!

Or, if you went in at night they would stop right in front of you and hold a shot gun or something else on you while their buddies would help them selves.
They knew all the companies who hauled boxed meat! Swinging meat as too hard to steal but boxed was made to order! They didn't really mess with produce as it just wasn't as profitable to steal a box of bell peppers as it was meat!

They changed the route into the market about 2 years ago but they have signs up pointing the direction to the Market. Hunts Point and the Bronx has really cleaned up the area and it's nowhere as bad as it used to be! In fact the last block into the Meat Market is practically deserted on the sidewalks and you don't get hasseled by the low lifes! Not to say there aren't any left as they are still walking the streets just closer to the Buckner.

Now if you get to HP the day before and are parked in the back in the parking area there is this really sweet Chinese girl that comes around and puts a flier on your truck for her family's restaurant. There is a ton of food on that menu and they WILL deliver right to the truck! And it's great food, as is the small diner in the Meat Market!

I never minded delivering there, it was always fairly easy to find the place. There are many signs you can follow that say truck route to Hunts Point.

I started as an o/o from the beging , And my first run was out of miami to Hunt piont Market. I really did'nt have much experiance. Its no way near as bad as other hands make it out to be. More then anything I was intimidated by what every one had told me about HPM. So naturaly when I left the pilot off exit 7 from the nj turnpike towards the bronx I was scard. Not knowing what to expect. I'll tell you what dont idle out in or outside the Market because you will have a cop banging on your door writting you a citation for $350.00 I got lukey they cut me a breake, but the driver behind me was not so lucky. All in all, people drive crazy. just stay in your lane and let everyone else figure it out. I stayed about 36 hours out side after unloading ,waiting to load back at the same place and did'nt have a problem. Real good Pizza joint there at the end of HPM ave right before it ends at hallecks street (fratelli's Pizza) Awsome grub.. I liked it so much I've been running the same run for the last 5 years Miami,FL to Bronx HPM every week .. And the best part is,How there are so many people scared to go, It pays really good...lol

I was un-lucky when I went to HPM. I did recieve a $350.00 ticket for idling. It was in the 30's the night I got the ticket. I have to admit the restaurant there is very good! The first time I had to deliver to NYC in a big truck was a load I picked up in Hickory, NC and delivered to Lower Manhattan off of 14th street. Talk about SCARED. I was trying my best to get out of that load. I mean I could see starting out on a 1st load to NYC to maybe Brooklyn or Bronx, but give me a break. Manhattan for the first time. I sat at the Vince Lombardi plaza for a long time looking over the directions and talking to other ppl that had been through there. I went over the GWB got off at the 1st exit, turned right at 2nd light onto Broadway, went through Times Square, got on 7th avenue, then turned right on 14th. Crazy!!! Ride through NYC at 2 am on a Sunday morning. I got through it just fine, no problems. GREAT EXPERIENCE!

It's legal as long as nobody else knows about it. But get caught and you'll be showering with strange men for a few years.
