I'm in the same boat. Gonna try for Roehl also. Just not really sure when. Need to get out there soon though. Can't wait. Maybe we'll be up there at the same time. Gotta save up some cash first.

Does Roehl hire tech school grads? If not, do they offer training from the ground up for people with no experience?
Also, from reading this thread it sounds like reefer may be the division to get into if they are short drivers in that area. If you drive reefer for Roehl, do you have to unload the truck yourself or do the places you deliver have people that unload it for you.
Any help, advice, things to think about I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance. -
I wouldn't count on ever getting much more than 2500 miles a pay period. They have always had a reputation for weak miles even when the economy was good. The key to getting miles over the weekend is to get a longer run. Otherwise you are arriving at your destination on Saturday and doing a restart on Sunday.
When I drove 7/4-7/3 I got as many miles as the national drivers and still had guarenteed hometime. Still learning the ropes and how to say "NO" as an owner operator. I like the fact that I get to make my own decisions and decide when and how long to stay at home. Just had an 1800 mile run from Dayton MN to Miami, but it had four extra stops. I figured out I lost money on the extra stops as opposed to running linehaul miles instead. -
its been a while, delivered in houston and got a load going to atlanta,ga delivered that and picked up in alabama going up to arcadia. 10 min. from the consignee a bird hit my windshield at 55 mph and put a soft ball size crack. couldnt fix it in marshfield so i headed to kaukana and they fixed it. from there they had me hook up to a curtain and go down to saukville. i got there and put in my p/u number. after waiting 2 hours they call me on the cb and tell me my number is no good. come to find out another company picked up my load the day before. so by then im out of hours and go down to oak creek. ended up going back to saukville with a flat and got a load going to detroit. picked up a 15000 lb load in indiana with 1 stop in chicago and final in waukesha.
they got me a load going to wilkes barre,pa delivering to a drilling site and the road i had to go on was no fun. and it was pouring so that mad for a messy work site. ended up folding my steels on top of the load so i wouldnt get to muddy. next morning i picked up the city at a scrap yard and got loaded with 49000 pounds of metal punch outs in 24 barrels. ended up being 36000 ilbs on my drives so back i went and moved i skid to the back. retarped and went back and was over 900 on my front axle of the trailer so i went with it. i was close to the border and did not want to go back for a 3rd time. they had me take the load home and on friday and deliver it on monday in syracuse and then go right back home for another day at the house. heading to mass. in the morning to pick up a load of something heading to certain teed up in l'anse. hopefully this will be a good 11 days. -
Keep up the posts Rotax74. I am thinking about Roehls flatbed fleet. I have been driving for the past 6 years but it is just van freight. Can you give me some insight. I would like to know what type of products do you haul, do they allow you on toll roads, how did they get you to orientation? I'd appreciate the feedback.

Saukville. Is this plant were they make the slinkies?
-
Not Rotax, but yes Saukville is where we pick up slinkies.
-
we haul almost everything. i usually have a differnt product everyload. they dont seem to be bother with toll roads except for the ohio one they dont want to run me that way to ny. i picked up a load out of mass. this was a first for me it was 1 ton bags of crushed limestone going to lanse,mi. i blew a trailer air bag on the way to weigh the load so i had to drive 60 miles to fultonville to get it replaced. delivered that friday afternoon. sat at certainteed for 2.5 hours waiting for them to tell me if i should take empty to iron mountain or bobtail. got a load of plows going to vermont due monday morning. and the system wont send me routing cause the fuel stops are to far out of route so they had to give me verbal routing which isnt bad but time consuming. so i spent 60 dollars going thru canada and crossing the mackina bridge i get to do it again expensive week.
-
That is a pretty sweet bridge. I suppose you have gotten to cross the one from Kingston, ON to Watertown, NY (Thousand Island?), that was a nice one as well.
-
no i havent done that crossing yet ive done niagra, cornwall and i just came through champlain. but ill probably get it sooner or later.
