Goodmorning, i rember these day's and like everboby here saying , short dont make money, horse pucky, i rather take 20 short runs over one long run, why becuse during the short runs , you can stop and cacth your breath ,before the next short one i did 7 shorts # 2500 miles thats was good money maker for me , but i was super tired too, my dm had a folder on his desk with my name on the front, what would happen his other drivers , would say too him, i dont want too this short run , so they sit, put this load in my folder, and when i got empty , bam i had a load , becuse he knew i wouldnt say no, i just took it and ran with it, most times ,becuse of other driver the load be late and i overheard him , tell the rec, we have our best driver on ,it , he says it be there day aft tommorrow and i be there, they come out too shake my hands and stuff, its all about trip planning, your hours ,you can run and im sure it hasnt change much sence i left, but most imporment is too get hold of your dm, and work with him, he is there too make everyboby money, no matter how short the runs or even moving trls in town , i did that in lardo, all the drivers was sitting around moaning and complaing, i look at her , says whats this folder, in her hispanic voice she said these all the loads that need deliverd today, why not any these driver, they dont want too, so i took the folder and moved 25 trls for her all drop and hook and all in town , easy work, easy money ask for more she said no and thanked for the help, now i didnt know this till i got back too the yard and it rippled back too office, and my dm thank me for well done job

i say that all the time. i'm just as happy with 5-100 mile runs than i would be with 1-500 mile run. Not to mention i'd get paid more with the sliding scale anyway. AND i'm kept busy. My DM knows i want to run, and if he sees memphis planning me over the weekend with junk runs (saving all the good ones for "their" drivers) he'll get me a few 400+ mi runs for the next week. but yeah...you're out earning money running one of your 5 100 mile runs, while joe blow is on his 2nd pack of cigarettes complaining why he's been sitting for 2 days. (ooops sorry Injun....i thru the drivers sex in there again. should have just said "the driver" huh)...JustSonny Thanks this. -
Some of the best money I have made has been on little short runs. Granted being an OO I am in a totally different set of shoes, but when I was running for Yellowstone Trucking, there were a couple of times where I moved 1 crate from one side of an airport to another and made 600.00 for it. Simply because no one else wanted to screw with it. I also got paid a grand to run a 14 wide oversize from Everett Wa to Sea Tac Airport. Took them less than 15 minutes to have me loaded, less than 30 to have me empty and the drive took 45. In fact it took less time to pull the load than it did to get the permit.
I have no problem running short hauls, they can add up really fast, and if you play your cards right, it isnt hard to find ones that pay 3-10.00 a mile depending on how far they are going.
This is where the big companies like swift screw them selves, when they pay drivers by the mile, drivers do not have the incentive to do the short hauls because they know the more then can keep the left door closed the more money they can make.
If they paid thier drivers apercentage of what the truck makes, drivers would be more incined to do the short hauls, but then again that would cause a whole different kind of problem because then drivers would actually know how much money the truck actually was making. -
you really need to hang in there keep up with dm and keep giving 110% it will come back to ya / you get back what you put in
JustSonny Thanks this.
