The Mack 13 is lower than a Road Ranger. RR 12.32 to 1, Mack 13.91 to 1
Some Mack 13 are even lower at 16 to1. These are great off road. Your 4.30s are a good low rear for off road also. I guess I was speeking Road Ranger. A 9, 10 or 13 RR will work, I just think the lower gearing of the 8LL or 18 would be better. Mack actually has better gearing in their trannys for dump trucking and off road. I always liked the Mack trannys. If all a dump truck ever did was black top any thing would work. As soon a you do dirt work on any soft ground with any amout of weight lower is better. You know what I mean. You have been their before I'm sure.
Your lucky! All our hot rock is buy the ton and you know how you can sit and wait with black top. At $75 you aint getting rich but its doable. We were averaging $48 to $55 an hour!:biggrin_25513: We parked em! Good luck. Sound like you will be able to atleast buy hot dogs this week. Buy the way want to buy three more I think their for sale.

Same in Houston. industry destroyed by cheap haulers. Last I heard the vuto's were providing 5 mil. liability and contracting for 18 an hour.

Heard a contractor yelling on the radio in northern LA for bobtails paying $45.00 hr.

Also...was rolling around in the panhandle of Fla. and pulled in to a mom and pop fuel stop. Saw a dude fueling a beautiful KW bobtail.... chrome galore etc. I asked him how in the hell does he afford this truck? He tells me he paid 115k and he's working the Hwy 77 expansion job..... he goes on to say him and his buddies sent the cheapies packing.........protected their job he says.........I believe him....

I know what your saying about the trannys and gear ratios.

All the blacktop used to be by the ton. But waiting at the plant for an hr or more and waiting on the job sucks big time. There is only 6 O/O and one company with about 15 trucks that haul out of the quarry. Well one day the fleet owner said to all the O/O about 3 years ago to meet him at his shop on a Saturday. They all showed up and he said he wanted to tell the quarry we are going hourly for all blacktop work. They all agreed. And the quarry changed it. I wasnt working there at that time. But my dad was. He is also an O/O.

Your right we are not getting rich my any means but then the plant is F-ed up its nice to know your getting paid. But we don't haul as much black top as we use to. I guess alot of the contractors are getting their own trucks cheaper an hr. But it all works out.

That was pretty cool of a company owner to include the o/os. We tried that here. Tried to get every body together and demand higher rates. The quarry said " If you dont like our rates dont haul our material " They just brought in out of town trucks the will work for the $hi+ rates. They can have it!

Dump trucking in iowa isnt bad right now but it could be better! i work for a company that has 10 trucks and we keep all 10 goin pretty steady. We have 4 trucks and pups that haul for 1 quarry and the rest of them usually work for local contractors. We are averaging between 65 and 70 an hour. I dont know what the ton rate is for the quarry but i know it is decent enough that you can make a little money! As far as road tractors being converted into dump trucks..... they can work you just gotta get the right truck! I drove a 2000 International 9100 that was a single axle tractor converted into a tri axle dumper. it has a m-11 at 400 hp and a 10 spd and it went every where i wanted too! But hey i drive an 07 western star now with a 450 mercedes :biggrin_25513: and a 8LL. Good luck and keep on truckin!
