Was that because they all let a wrist pin go before the bull gear went down? I know at least one guy on here and two personally that have had the bull gear go down, and at least one of those guys I know personally is obsessive on his maintenance, changing and sampling the oil every 10k.

This whole EGR EPA engines are a joke. The Acid Rain it is supposed to cut down on, doesn't have any effect on the environment anyways.

The big problem with the EGR engines, especially the ISX, is that they are designed to be run full blast, moving LOTS of air through it. I have been told by many dealer mechanics that the worst thing you can do is let your company bean-counters in the office tell the shop to cut the HP and torque back. This causes the EGR valves to plug up with soot. It also cuts back fuel economy too...

The shop I worked in we did a lot of engines, very quickly and very well, we did at least one 3406 a week for burnt valves or dropped seats.
It was also very rare to see a "B" that went to 500,000 miles without the head gasket blowing and cutting the block to raise # 4,5 & 6.
In our area when the N14 came out the "B" was replaced quickly and they had a lot of injector problems at that time. They use to buy the 460 to get the cam that gave them the better Jake's then derate to 430.

I've run a 60 series dd. It was a good engine but it was a company truck. I myself love a 3406B Cat. The Kw900B dump truck that I drive has one in it. About a year ago it mushroomed a valve push rod and pushed it through the block. The shop we took it to cleaned it up real well and ground the pieces and stuck it back together then put something like JB weld on the inside and out. It's still holding with NO leaks or problems. And it is turned up!

Thats what I think too, working them ISX's hard ALL THE TIME makes them live longer. The lower hp rating, the sooner they seem to get constipated. With high idle time specific to big-fleet way of "trucking" being great help to kill them. Thanks for your input, seemingly it all comes to proper combustion I think. Always was

I called select the other day and they put all their used trucks through a 146 point check before selling them and will stand behind them from one to two years depending on the truck. BUT...They are just like any other dealer, they'll break one off in your ### when it comes to the price of the truck. I'm cleared with my bank to buy a truck which I told the salesman what I had to work with and what I was looking for and he tells me he has this nice low mile century that's black in color and he'll work the numbers and send me some pic's which he did but $3,000 out of my range. I call him & told him I told you my price range? Sends me another pic of a truck with 100,000 miles more on it(no where near as nice as the 1st one) and the price was dead on my working price!!HAHA And less a year of coverage. I just think a freight liner truck is over priced. I bought one one time and had to give the dealer $4,800 to get rid of it.HAHA. So if you buy one plan on keeping it until it dies because resale isn't worth ####.

A year and a half ago I was not familiar with the detriot bull gear problem, but in the last year I personaly know of three of them. They resulted in a fair amount of down time for the trucks.

the bull gear & the bull gear bearing go. sometines one, sometimes the other. I think it depends on the date or the specific location of the mfr of theese parts. when my neighbor found a chunk of a gear in his oil pan, it was part of a tooth from the gear. the shop told him he has a shelve full of bull gears that he keeps in stock for many that he replaces. that was a 12.7 det. a 2000 model. he bought 98' freightliner later & had the bull gear bearing go out. I have a 95' ser 60 det. but mine is a 11.1 lit & have no problems. so far everything on my truck has outlasted most other trucks componets by almost twice as long. I think the quality of the parts made were much better. when I had my inframe done just recently, the gear train was in good shape.
