Ok, Here is the deal. My father, 55, is recently retired from the state of New Jersey where he worked for 25 years for the Department of Transportation. He has his CDL and drove trucks before he was working for the DOT. When he retired we all moved to NC and he figured that he would just get a regular part-time job and be happily retired. Well he looked and looked for 6 months, but couldn't even get a job at pizzahut.(or anything close to that) We were struggling hardly enough to buy food.
So he figured he would apply online for a couple of trucking jobs, a few called him back, but he didn't have enough RECENT experience. Then CR England called and we thought that it was a God send.
They would send him to school and he would have a guaranteed Job. They said he would be home for at least 2 days a week. So he said, "When can I start." They said he could leave on sat. , it was Thurs. We never even thought to look it up in the forums. It was a sound company so we thought. Then after he left my mom was on the computer and came across this thread and we started to read up on all the stories from past (current) employees.
Does anyone have any advice that we can give him when he calls us. We are very worried now and he is already there.

If he is willing to drive team and be a company driver he should be fine.
Most of the grievences here are from the "Flease" deal. I myself had a run of bad trainers. I am sure that has changed now.
All companies are eager to take new drivers. I know that many here poo-poo my feelings, yet I still see potential of someday returning there. I just have to loose alot of BMI.

Thank you for the positive info. It makes us both feel a little better.

CR England bites. Your father will find that out soon enough. Sorry if that ruined your day, but I am not into making up stories so people feel good.
BTW, if your father values his health, advise him to keep quite about being a state DOT worker. Some drivers are a little wacky about people who have worked for DOT and/or the state.opalbeauty Thanks this. -

ok so he hasnt gotten there yet hasnt signed any papers ect..... so should I tell him to come home? or should he go forward with this? he needs the training. is there another way to get the training? help us out here people please cause he doesnt have to report till Sunday -
There are other companies out there that do a good job.
I never drove for England, so I can't say first hand. However, consider this:
They have ABOUT 4800 trucks. They bring in ABOUT 400 new candidates per week for training.
There must be some kind of problem there...either the conditions are so bad no one wants to stay, and/or the vetting process is so bad, they bring in lousy candidates.
I had coffee with an England trainer last night. (both of us were having PMs done at a TA). He told me if you can get by the training and the first year, if you can run team without much trouble and if you can handle being treated like a POS for the first few months after training, then it's an OK company to work for. He's been there 6 years, been divorced, lost his house and looked like crap.
Said he was making OK money now (60-65,000) and got plenty of miles.
He blames vetting for the trouble and says the ownership just doesn't care. Period.
So you take it from there.
There are plenty of other companies out there that train. The problem is your husband has been away from the industry too long and every other company will require him to go thru a driver course. It's exactly the same as a CDL course except he won't have to test out at the end.opalbeauty Thanks this. -
thank you all for your advice I dont think it has helped me in anyway though cause I dont have any way to get intouch with my husband and I cant warn him before he signs any papers so we will see what happens All things work to the good to those who love God. I will just keep praying hoping you will all be praying with me

England will require to forfeit money for the training that will not gaugrantee him a job. Just a heads up. The bus ticket out was free, comming home is his prob.
All companies will require some form of investment to drive for them. CR england is just one of the many. Trucking doesnot pay you money based on what ever the voice on the other end of the phone says.
England in my opinion is the lesser of all the evils out there that call themselves a trucking company. Just dont sign for the lease. Alas company drivers last I heard were forced dispatch.opalbeauty Thanks this. -
Opalbeauty, I'd like to say that yeah, there's a lot of horror stories around about England, as well as a lot of the other "big box" trucking companies, and a lot of it, I wouldn't say is untrue, but not everyone has the same experiences. I started in the industry with CRE, and yeah, I've seen, heard, and been through some of the horror stories... To be completely honest with you, my experience with the company was mostly decent. I went to school with them, did my training with them, got into a company truck, and all was right in the world. I managed to end up with a very good DM, which was pretty much the main reason I was a happy driver. I didn't have many real issues with them, until I decided to try and run a lease truck. I'd say to tell your hubby to stay away from the lease, and try to get on with a decent DM.
opalbeauty Thanks this.
