I'm interested in becoming a truck driver and I'm not really sure where to start. I don't really have the $5000. it takes for school so I am looking into company schools. My question is, how long does it take for a recruiter to call you back? I've called the recruiter for swift 4 times and left a message twice over the past 2 weeks and still haven't got to talk to him. Is there some kind of waiting period or is there just that many people trying to become truck drivers?

probably a backlog of calls to try and keep up with.

try a different recruiter......?? or just keep calling, after all, if its a toll free call, you ain't spending your money.

If you haven't already done so, do the on-line application. The recruiters get hundreds of calls from people who just want a "little information" and then spend way to much time giving the "little information".

Once you've applied on-line, they know a little bit more about you and know that you're at least serious enough to have gone to the trouble to do the app.

There are way more applicants than jobs. So, if a recruiter gets 40 calls a day wanting info, it's easy for you to get shuffled around and lost in a deep dark hole. Not every applicant follows thru with the hiring process.

IF I HAD IT ALL OVER AGAIN I WOULD TAKE A CORRESPONDENCE COURSE TO BE A ELECTRICIAN. THEN A TECH SCHOOL THEN A APPRENTENCE PROGRAM, THEN DEPENDING HOW YOUNG AND HEALTHY GO TO ALASKA FOR A JOB TRAINING. COUPLE YEARS COME BACK TO LESS AIR CONDITIONING AND HAVE A HECK OF A RESUME. wHILE ALL THIS IS GOING ON THE ECONOMY WILL GET BETTER AND BETTER AND FIND YOURSELF IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME. I HAD TO PAY BACK CHILD SUPPORT SO I DID NOT HAVE TO TIME BACK THEN OR I WOULD HAVE TRIED THAT CAREER INSTEAD. BUT IF YOU REALLY NEED TO BE A TRUCKER THEN..........

The Trucker life is not glamourous and high adventure. It's hard work, long hours behind the wheel, away from home and family for long periods.Putting up with bad drivers, terrible weather conditions, stupid dispatchers, waiting for hours to get loaded or unloaded. Think real hard about it before doing it.Like they say keep calling swift and also check other companies that offer training. You gotta start somewhere and pay your dues like everyone else.Good LUCK!

Thanks everyone. I did call them again and got hooked up with a different recruiter. She had me fill out the on-line application and she said to call her back on monday and then we'll see where we go from there. I've done a lot of research and talked with my family about it, I have a very strong and stable family and my wife and kids support me in my new adventure so hopefully everything will work out.

    WHOA TROOPER!! DONT DO IT!!!!

Before you do ANY of that, call your unemployment office. Virginia Employment Center will pay 100% of your tuition if you're registered with them. Different states, different unemployment rules. Worth a try at least.

Check into it first before you sign ANY contracts with ANY company.
