    Anyone know of any smaller trucking companies that will hire "Newbies"? I live in Dover, DE and am getting out the Air Force soon. After all the research I've done on here I'm a little worried about going to the "Mega-Carriers".:biggrin_25526: If anyone can point me/newbies in the right direction it would be much appriciated.

    Try not to listen to what everyone says about the "big" companies.. You have to start somewhere and no matter where you start its all about you and your attitude. Half the negative stuff on this site about "big" companies are posts from people who never have worked for the company. For every 5 people who"rag" about a company there probably are 5 that are happy with them.
    Just get hired and get that 1st year under your belt and many more opportunities will be available.... :biggrin_255:

    I know that when people are ########, whining and complaining it is usually because they aren't happy with anything in life. I know that most of the bad comments come from those very same people. However, I also know that there are some very good people on this site and they too have been screwed over a few times by the various companies.

    After spending the last 15 years in the Air Force, I'm use to being committed to one job. I just want to make sure (with the help of the positive folks on this site) that I get in with a company that I can stick with. I don't like job hopping and I don't want to go to a company just to get experience. I want to be able to go to a company and know that I'm going to be there for a very long time. I know that the trucking industry has its ups and downs, but so does every other industry. I know that trucking companies change the way they operate all the time. I am just trying to gather as much information to be able to make an informed decision as to what company to dedicate myself to.

    I do appriciate the feed back. Any and all feedback is appriciated.

    There out there, some advice I was given was look at Fleet directory, another thing i've done is a google search for transport jobs in my local area. That came up with a few, and there's always checking out the local trucstop and seeinng what companies drive through there, and try talking to some of there drivers. You can also do google streatview if one of the big companies have a terminal localy and see if there are any nestetled by them.

    As I stated in the first post, I'm a newbie! I am getting out of the Air Force soon and will be starting a driving school in January. I'm not sure, but I think Wal-Mart wants expierience drivers. Thanks for the info though. I will send that to a few of my friends that already drive.

    If you have a really good driving and employment record then try giving crete/schaffer a call. They are a really good company but don't always hire students. They have been lately though. Check out careersingear or bigrigjobs also. Another option is to find an owner operator willing to take you on and show you the ropes. Like you said above about long term employment, if you can find a good company to begin with then you won't be job hopping. There are plenty of good companies out there and there's no reason to job hop just to get experience. Unless you are a felon, or have dui's or a bad record, then I recommend Swift or England or Werner. I'm not bashing those companies you are just going to have a much better success rate at a smaller company. One of the biggest reasons is going to be your dispatcher. At the mega-companies the dispatchers are responsible for over a hundred drivers at once. This makes you a number and when you have a problem or need something it is going to be tough. At the smaller companies the DM's are responsible for a handful of drivers. You have a much better chance of getting loads where you want to go getting home when you need to, if you have a problem then you can work through it together. You will have a much more personal relationship. Just keep them happy that's all!

    Chompi, Thanks for the response! It's nice to have folks like you on here to help us new guys out. As for my driving record, it's spotless. I have no tickets/accidents of any kind against me. The last ticket I had was back in '92. As for the smaller companies in my area, they are not hiring anyone without experience. I have to stay here until my wife Retires, so it looks like we'll be here until Jan 2012. I plan on trying to get with a small company so I can build a good repour with everyone at the company. I know I wouldn't make it real well in a big company because I don't put up with B.S. to well. I have no problem calling an ugly baby ugly if you know what I mean.
