I was thinkin bout puttin a 100 watt amp on my 959. Are the "deer hunters" any good? How long should the coax between amp and radio be? Does it matter? My dead key should be 2 watt with amp on right? Does the "pre amp" pull signals In better? (Just tryin to learn!)

this must have been a "dumb question"!!!!!!!
-
NO question is dumb only the ones you don't ask and don't get answered.
OK ....
Quick answer NOTHING wrong with a 100 watt amp on your 959 and try 2 watts that sounds about right.
PREAMP .... YES AND NO sometimes it will help you to hear weak stations sometimes not I run them on my ham radios IF I NEED THEM I HAVE IT ....
COAX ..... If the input to the amp is made corectly you should not have to worry about the length of the coax ..... play with it see if it helps you.
MOST hamamps have preamps too this is mine on 2 meters.Attached Files:

Thanks WA4GCH. that was good info. I appreciate the reply. Have a good one

Whats always worked best for me on the coax length is.....
antenna - amp 12 foot unless i run a meter inline then i use 11.5 foot....
radio - amp 6 foot.....sometimes you cant make these lengths work for
the perticular installs per where you have to mount the radio or amp....
Not stateing this to be a fact just these are the lengths that work best for me -
Thanks. Right now i have 3ft between the radio and amp(thats what the guy i bought it from said to do) so should i extend it just to see what it does? and what am i looking for, an increase in power, or better swr's by lengthening or shortening the jumper coax?
So do you think the "deer hunter" brand is any good, or did i just waist my $$ ? Thanks again for your input. -
The only length for coax is how long to you need to hook things together.
COAX DOES NOT CHANGE SWR UNLESS IT IS 75 ohm on a 50 ohm system.
A 50 ohm coax just moves your signal from the radio to your amp what you are seeing is the voltage point that your V SWR V stands for VOLTAGE SWR meter is seeing if you move it you will see the SWR change but it really is NOT your just tricking the meter.
Don't go cutting coax thats a radio myth .....
AS for amps .....
Since they are not legal and are not built to a FCC spec if yours works for you then it's a good amp .... just like radios some like a partictular amp
sadly most are junk in the real radio world but work ok for cb use. -
Gotcha! Thanks so much everyone for the advice. just what i needed to know. i really appreciate this forum.

This is very true but you would be suprised how many people will tell you if you
cant get your swr down add length to your coax and it will work....lol....yes it will
make your meter think its working......tune the antenna then run your coax so your tuneing coax
with the antenna and not getting a true reading....
amps....there are so many out there nowadays....they are all copies of each other just
some builders take time and know how to tune the output tuneing.....anybody can build
an amp, but not everybody knows how to tune 1 -
I was also wondering if my other radio (cobra 29) is at 2.5 or 3 watts dead key, and i hook up 100 watt amp to it, will it harm it? Can't adjust dead key on that radio.
