I'm curious what people's thoughts are about what factors, both factors that you actively control (eg, music, diet) and factors you don't actively control (eg, your pay, personality) make for a happy trucker. Please, I really don't want to know about people's fantasies here. I'm not asking what would make you happy as I probably already can guess the answer for most people. I'm asking what does make you happy or contribute to making your life on the road more pleasant.

I'm asking this with the perspective of someone who is seriously looking into attending CDL school in the near future.

Also, I know a lot of people don't care for trucking or feel it has taken a turn for the worse. I understand that but I'm really wanting to hear the positives here as I think the negatives get a lot of attention already. Even if you don't like trucking as much as you did, you can still respond of course but humor me and stay with the postives if you reply.

    Thanks to all!

Truckers are either hungry or horny.

If they don't want sex, make them a sandwich !!!!!!

My wife makes me happy. Getting to spend time with her every evening and sleep next to her in our own bed every night makes me happy. Therefore, having a job which allows me to do those things makes me happy. That said job is a trucking job is a bonus at best.

No matter how much you like your job, it will still always be a job, i.e. something you wouldn't do unless someone was paying you. Its good to like what you do but the workplace is not where I'd personally choose to seek my happiness.

    KennLove Thanks this.

Right now is a good time for me to give you a reply, because Im not back out on the road yet. I have a little more than 4 years driving big truck, but I havent driven in quite some time. This is how I remember it.....

The worst times were when my expectations were too high. I did not expect my dispatcher to be overworked, or the poor communication at the corporate office. I certainly didnt expect the employees at the shippers and receivers to be tired of suffering through drivers. I didnt expect to be routed around toll roads and straight thru busy downtown city roads.

However, when I learned that most of the players in the industry were just as overworked and under-appreciated as I was; I found a degree of happiness that was acceptable and managable. I found myself going the extra mile if the oppritunity arose, and even when it wasnt well received, I had the satisfaction of doing my job well.

Eat right, exercise, and expect very few people to take extra steps to make you happy, and find your satisfation in a job well done. You can be a happy driver too.

what makes me happy? I'm most happy when i'm rollin' down the road on a 400+ mi run knowing i'll make some sort of profit, and not have to owe anything on the truck. I'm happy when i hit 'next message' on my QC, and see a 500 mi run. I'm happy anytime i'm rollin' thru Indianapolis. I'm happy when i DON'T have to run thru Chicago.

i'm happy when i'm rollin' down the road, listening to some Stevie Ray Vaughn puffin on a cigar, drinkin' a Miller Lite.....er......apple juice. :biggrin_2559::biggrin_2559:

Happiness is a state of mind and can exist in many different situations and manifests in individuals unpredictably. Happiness generally comes from within and is only partially influenced by external conditions.

I believe a man with lots of time to daydream will mostly never be happy, therefore truck drivers as a lot will score on the lower end of the happiness chart. Too much time peering out through a windshield watching life pass by.......
