One thing that is important to me in a life on the road is connectivity. I spend a lot of time using the web both for business and entertainment. I'm just wondering if anyone uses 3G network while on the road. If so, how does it work? Cost vs. Coverage? Bandwidth limitations?

On the same token, I know a lot of truckstops and motels have wi-fi. I'm wondering if netflix would stream on either of these networks. I'm also interested in being able to upload video and pictures to the web. I also play some online games.

I'm sure either network is fine for stuff like maps, e-mail, forums, etc... I want to know just how much is possible, and if its going to cost me an arm and a leg.

And your testicles, if you let them. If you mean a 3G smartphone, mine works great. Dont think you can use it for netflicks however. Sounda like you need a laptop to me. Wi-Fi sucks in lots of truckslops, IMO

i use verizon, and let me say i am a very picky mofo especially when it comes to speed, but i am very impressed. only thing is the 5g limit which isnt as bad as i expected, but you can forget netflix and stuff.

i download a big load of tv and movies when im at home with real internet and just use it to browse the web on the road. havnt ever lost signal yet.

truckstop wifi is a joke if it was free we could talk but i would never pay for that.

I use Sprint on the road. 3G works ok but not good enough for movies. Same 5GB limit on downloads each month. Not a problem if you don't try to download movies. Their much advertised 4G network is BS. Have only found three or four places with 4G in the past year. 3G is fine for normal surfing though.

3G and the new 4G have culmative bandwidth limits, normaly max out at 5gigs a month. It normaly has a better speed then wifi, but coverage is the same as a cell phone good in some areas, nothing in others. Wifi is generaly cheaper on a "per use" basis, but can add up if your paying to use it at truckstops. The bandwidth on wifi is "shared" between everyone using it at that location. For best results you'd proabley have to do a combo of them, espicialy if you plan on doing streaming movies and such.

I usually look for a Starbucks somewhere since the wifi service is free now.

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't aware that you had to pay for wi-fi at truck stops. I know the local mall has a free hot spot, and I'll keep the starbucks thing in mind. I saw the 5gb limit, and the top line plan was 10gb for $80 a month, seems kinda steep.

I'll probably go the "download movies at home and watch on the go" route. I play a MMORPG (online role playing game). I'm sure many have heard of World of Warcraft. I play something similar to that. I'd love to be able to take that on the road with me.

I'll probably go with the 5gb plan on 3G to start, and see how my usage goes the first month. Can always upgrade. Thanks again for the info.

You might want to check before using truck stop wifi for mmorpg gaming. Quite a few chains use OpenDNS to block certain sites (like anything torrent-related, for example) because usage would hog too much bandwidth. I haven't tried it but you may want to ensure that WoW isn't one of those sites/apps on the blacklist.

I've been seriously considering getting a Verizon account lately. Like yourself, connectivity is pretty important to me on the road as well; but I can't always take my 10 hour break in a location with a wifi hotspot, and truckstop wifi isn't always the greatest (even though it's better than nothing). The only hurdle for me is that I'm a Linux user, so I have to perform a couple of software tweaks to get a USB wifi dongle to work with the OS.

Thanks for the feedback Tech. I'll be getting a windows laptop, probably through dell. I don't NEED to bring my game on the road, but it would be pretty sweet.

The 3G coverage map looks pretty inclusive in most areas of the country, and I'm sure it'll be fine for simple browsing, e-mail, etc...

all the mcdonalds have free wifi i have downloaded plenty of torrent using them you can also root/flash/hack most smartphones to use them as a modem or wife hotpot for free with sprint so when youre using data it shows up like you are surfing the web on your phone i have a tp2 and just hack the registry for that
